Abby McEwen of St. Albert made her international debut for Canada at last month’s World Junior Ski Cross Championship at Valmalenco, Italy and finished 22nd overall.
McEwan, 16, also placed 13th at the Swiss National Championships in Hienzenburg.
The Paul Kane High School student was one of the youngest competitors at both events. Junior worlds was open to 16- to 20-year-olds and the Swiss nationals featured competitors on the World Cup circuit.
McEwen is a member of the Sunridge Ski Club’s hybird Alpine/Ski Cross program.
The St. Albert Saints spiked the ball for first place at the Alberta Volleyball Association’s premier No. 3 tournament last weekend at the Saville Community Sports Centre.
The U15 girls finished 5-2 in matches won/lost and 10-7 in sets won/lost.
The Saints played three round-robin matches before the playoffs.
The tournament featured 69 teams divided into four divisions and the Saints prevailed in the highest division.
It’s the third premier tournament in which the Saints have finished top four. They were second in the opening tournament and placed fourth in the second event.
Overall this season the Saints are 15-7 in match play and 31-18 in sets. They are ranked first out of 69 teams going into the May 4-5 provincials in Calgary.
The Saints are Alexis Anderson, Jamie Bain, Hannah Gorgichuk, Ayla Hermanutz, Elisabeth Kirk and Ashley Thomas of the Sir George Simpson Voyageurs, Julia Donnelly of the Vincent J. Maloney Marauders, Stephanie Mar of the W.D. Cuts Crusaders and Julia Skakun and Brooke Zoschke of Parkland County.
The head coach is Dianne Worthington of the 2012 undefeated SAPEC Tier 1 junior high champion Voyageurs and the assistant coach is Fiona Moffat.
The St. Albert Arch Angels equalled their ranking at the second annual Flat Track Fever roller derby event with two wins and two losses for a sixth-place finish last weekend at the Calgary Olympic Oval.
In the seeding round of 30-minute games, the St. Albert Heavenly Rollers’ affiliate beat Fort McMurray’s Tar Sand Betties 138-36 and fell 183-56 to the Saskatoon Roller Derby League’s Mindfox.
The teams met again in the full-game elimination round. The Arch Angels were victorious over the Tar Sand Betties 196-136 and lost 351-210 to Mindfox.
The tournament featured 13 teams from across western Canada.
The season opener for the Heavenly Rollers is the May 11 doubleheader at the Pizza 73 fieldhouse at Servus Credit Union Place. The first whistle goes at 6 p.m. between the Greater Edmonton Junior Roller Derby League’s Spoilers and Stinkerbelles, followed by the Heavenly Rollers’ intermediate travel team, the Beezlebubs, against the Rez City Rollers.
Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Youths 10 and under get in free.
