With the high school sports season drawing to a close, at least one local rugby team is taking a run at provincial glory.
The Paul Kane girls’ rugby team closed out an undefeated season with a resounding 40-14 win against Stony Plain last Tuesday – thanks in no small part to Sydney DeLaMare, who scored the majority of Paul Kane’s points.
They’ll be back on the pitch Tuesday in St. Albert facing Harry Ainley in the semifinal match at 4:45 p.m. The winning team will go on to the final match on Thursday, playing the winner of the other semifinal match between Beaumont and Jasper Place.
The St. Albert Tigers Senior AAA Baseball team is batting .500 on the Sunburst Baseball League season so far after splitting a pair of games against the Confederation Park Cubs last week.
A 10-6 win over the Cubs at Legion park on Thursday came on the heels of a Monday-evening 13-5 loss to the Cubs on their home turf.
Earlier this season they went 1-1 against the Parkland Whitesox in Spruce Grove, posting a 3-0 loss in the season opener then coming back with an 8-2 win a week later.
In a north-versus-south Battle of Alberta on the gridiron last week, the north came up short.
The final tally was 36-15 for the South in the annual all-star game for graduating Grade 12s held at McMahon Stadium in Calgary last Monday, May 18.
With the help of St. Albert linebacker Rory O’Donovan and local defensive back Shaydon Philip, the North put up a decent fight before the South began racking up the points.
The North put the first touchdown on the scoreboard early in the first half, and when the South responded in kind, the North bounced back with another touchdown pass.
The South kept up the pressure and ended the first half with a 19-15 lead, which they extended in the second half for the lopsided final score.
The North didn’t fare much better in the Bantam Bowl, which saw the province’s most promising Grade 9 students face off the same day in Lethbridge.
Despite leading 13-10 at the half, the North couldn’t hold on to the lead and ultimately the South came out on top 31-13.
While the loss might sting a little, some very good news came out of that game for Jesse Stuht of the St. Albert Fury and J.P. Parent of the St. Albert 49ers. The two were selected from among the Bantam Bowl players to represent Team Alberta U16 at the 2016 International Bowl in Texas in January.
