Silver was as good as gold for the St. Albert Stealth at the Ringette Alberta U14 tween AA championship last weekend at Terwillegar Recreation Centre.

The Stealth finished first in the five-team round robin at 3-1, but lost 5-1 and 7-2 to Calgary Excel in the finals. The Excel had to beat the Stealth twice after losing 5-4 in overtime to the St. Albert squad in the round robin.

In the first playoff game, Mykenzie Howard recorded the Stealth’s lone goal and the fifth Excel marker was an empty-netter.

Katie Shigeta and Jayme Stadnyk scored in the sudden-death match. The Stealth also racked up 20 minutes in penalties.

The Stealth’s first game in the round robin was a 6-1 win over the Edmonton Elite. Anatonia Hood and Maddy Sanders potted two goals apiece and Megan Shigeta and Claire Brubaker added singles.

Sanders’ shorthanded effort in overtime sank the Excel. Ryiah Siffledeen assisted on the game winner. Katie Shigeta lit the lamp three times and Amanda Letourneau also connected.

The only round robin loss was 3-1 to Calgary KOR as Megan Shigeta found the back of the net.

The last game before the playoffs was 3-2 against the Central Alberta Sting. Sanders struck twice and Siffledeen also scored.

This is the first season for a tween AA team in the St. Albert Ringette Association. The Stealth competed in the U16 junior A division in the Black Gold League.

The St. Albert Flyers captured the north division pennant in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League in Saturday’s 6-4 win over the SSAC Bulldogs at Akinsdale Arena.

Ethan Lazaro tallied twice during a three-point night as the Flyers improved to 20-6-5 with one game remaining before the playoffs. They are ranked second overall behind the south division-leading Red Deer Northstar Chiefs (22-5-4) in the 26-team circuit.

Brendan Bow, Curtis Peck, Thomas Friesen and affiliate Josh Mahura also scored and Kole Bryks added two assists.

The Bulldogs (17-10-4) outshot the Flyers 20-7 in the third and 37-30 overall. Tyler Boe (8-1-3, 2.88 GAA) was in net.

The win was the 13th in 15 games for the 2012 North Cup champions and provincial bronze medallists.

The last regular season game is 1:30 p.m. Saturday against the last-place Maple Leafs (7-18-4) at Akinsdale Arena.
