Lauren Henderson of the St. Albert Mission is one of six Alberta players and 35 from across Canada invited to the Ringette Canada junior national team selection camp this weekend in Toronto.

It’s also a joint camp for 33 senior national team hopefuls.

The tryouts will determine the junior and senior rosters for worlds, Dec. 28 to Jan. 4 in Helsinki, Finland.

Henderson, 18, was the co-captain and first-team all-star forward at the belle U19AA nationals for the bronze-medal winning Mission.

The Team Alberta skater at the Canada Winter Games led the Mission in points at nationals with 18 and her seventh goal of the tournament completed the 3-2 come-from-behind victory over British Columbia in the bronze final.

Wednesday’s showdown between the 2014 provincial champions in first and second division women’s rugby ended with St. Albert losing 36-5 to the Clan at Airway Field.

The Edmonton Rugby Union spring league round robin determines the teams in the first and second divisions in the second half of the season.

St. Albert’s only try was a penalty try in the second half as the Clan (2-0), last year’s provincial first division winners, committed several penalties in a row within five metres of the try line.

St. Albert (1-1), the defending provincial second division champions, host the Parkland Sharks on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The first loss for the senior B St. Albert Miners after 24 consecutive victories, dating back to their 2014 undefeated season in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League, was Sunday’s 9-8 setback to the Rockyview Knights in Airdrie.

The Knights (4-1) tied it at eight while shorthanded with 7:19 to play and scored the winner on the power play with 3:27 remaining.

The teams combined for nine goals with the man advantage.

It was 3-2 Miners after the first period and 7-7 after 40 minutes.

Graedon Cornfield collected five assists as eight Miners spread the scoring around.

The Miners (2-1) were coming off a successful home opener, 21-4 over the South Edmonton Warriors (0-3) Friday at Go Auto Arena.

The Miners outscored the Warriors 14-0 in the last two periods.

Sean Reid racked up seven assists and nine points and Cornfield recorded eight goals and nine points. They were among eight players to fill the net for last year’s Presidents’ Cup national bronze medallists and provincial champions that finished 27-3 overall.

The teams cross paths Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena.

The U10 St. Albert Angels shone bright at the sixth annual Nose Creek Softball Tournament last weekend in Calgary.

The Angels finished 4-1-1 overall in their season opener.

Kailyn Knowlton belted four home runs in the playoffs and Kiara Charchuk and Robyn Brokenshire split the pitching duties in both games as the Angels beat the West Valley Avengers 9-3 in the semifinals and the Nose Creek Red Dragons 15-1 in the final.

The Angels used six pitchers while going 2-1-1 in the round robin. Scores were 11-11 against the Nose Creek Panthers 15-1 against the Nose Creek Boomers, 10-9 against the Nose Creek Mustangs and a 6-3 loss to the Avengers.

The Avengers started the same pitcher in the semifinals that threw a gem against the Angels in the round robin, but Riane Mohr led off the game with an eight-pitch at-bat that ended with a homer. The big blast sparked a five-run first inning and the Angels never looked back.

In the final, 11 of the 12 girls on the team scored runs against Red Dragons, who knocked off the Edmonton Warriors in the semifinals.
