The Flyers beat Calgary Royals Gold 5-2 to finish the tournament at 4-2-1.

In the semifinal the Flyers lost 8-7 in double overtime to the Red Deer Iroc Chiefs, the eventual gold medallists. The Flyers posted period leads of 2-1 and 5-2 but in the third let a 7-3 lead slip away as the Chiefs scored four times in the last six minutes of regulation time.

In the round robin the Flyers placed second at 3-1-1 and the Chiefs were third at 2-2-1.

The Red Deer Northstar Chiefs downed the Flyers 5-4 in the last game before the playoffs to finish first at 4-1.

The provincial draw featured the two finalists and third-place finishers in the north and south playoffs in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

In league play the Flyers (25-7-6) placed second in the north conference and defeated the first-place Lloydminster Rage (27-6-5) in the North Cup final 5-2.

The St. Albert Rush finished the season as Ringette Alberta silver medallists at the U12 petite B provincials in Medicine Hat.

In the final the Rush lost 7-3 to Red Deer. The team’s season record against the gold medallists was 0-4.

The Zone 5 Black Gold champions advanced to the final by beating Edmonton 7-5, Cochrane 8-3, Lethbridge 12-3 and Calgary 8-5 in the semifinal. Calgary was undefeated in the regular season.

The Rush skated into provincials as winners of four tournaments.

Diana Backer of St. Albert is going to her third Dominion Club provincial curling championship in four years after winning the B final at northerns Sunday in Sherwood Park.

Backer skipped her Granite rink of third Joanne Delanoy, second Larissa Belke and lead Monique May to a 4-3 victory over Jean Vinkler of the Crestwood. Backer scored a deuce in the last end with the hammer to win.

Provincials are in October in Airdrie.

In the B semifinal Backer edged Christina Monk of St. Albert 7-6. Down by two after giving up four in the second end, Backer battled back to lead 7-5 after seven.

Monk’s line-up included third Lauren Jenkyns, second Alison Howes and lead Laurie Schreiner.

In the men’s draw, Jamie King of St. Albert lost 7-4 in the B semifinal to Dan Sherrard of the Crestwood. King, third Craig King, second Ralph Killips and lead Brian Pfeifer fell behind 7-2 after giving up three in five. The teams shook hands after six ends.
