Fifteen swimmers from St. Albert are competing for the Olympian Swim Club at the western Canadian championships this weekend at the Pan Am pool in Winnipeg.
Racing for medals are Gillian Arraial, Emilie Desnoyers, Emily Flowers, Annika Kamminga, Caitlin Kamminga, Georgia Kidd, Paige Kremer, Kristan Kushlyk, Mackenzie Lubberding, Monica McDowell, Alyssa McNamara, Jennifer Morgan, Berkley Nowlan, Katrina Sharpe and Jacomie Strydom.
The swim meet is the second-highest level of competition in Canada.
The next major event for the Olympians is the Olympic trials at the end of March in Montreal. The St. Albert contingent of Kremer, Kushlyk, Lubberding, Morgan, Sharpe, Luke Peddie and Caitlin Kamminga have already qualified for the trials.
Wednesday’s 4-1 victory over the visiting KC Centennials put the St. Albert Flyers on top of the north conference of the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.
Brett Smythe and Brett Van Os each scored twice and Paul Lovsin assisted on all four goals. JT Bartlett stopped 24 shots as the Flyers extended their undefeated streak to 12 games.
The Flyers (21-5-6) were one point above the Lloydminster Rage (22-5-3) in the standings going into Friday’s game against the Maple Leafs at Castledowns Arena. The score was unavailable at press time.
The next home game is Wednesday against the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers at 7:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The last game before the playoffs is Feb. 26 in Leduc against the Oil Kings at 4 p.m.
For the first time in 10 years the cheer team at William D. Cuts School finished first in its division at the recent Edmonton junior high zone championships.
In division three Cuts beat out two teams for a berth at provincials next Saturday at Lillian Osborne School.
Division three is the highest level of competition at zones. Students are allowed to perform all stunts and can do full extensions on lifts.
Last year at zones Cuts placed second in division two.
