The Alberta Winter Games are underway for 56 St. Albert and Sturgeon County athletes with Zone 5 Black Gold/Yellowhead. The Games are hosted by Stony Plain, Spruce Grove and Parkland County. The closing ceremonies are Sunday.

More than 2,000 athletes from eight zones in the province are participating in 24 sports. For the majority of the athletes it’s their first taste of competition at a provincial level.

Going for the gold in ringette are the U16 junior A St. Albert SWAG.

The female bantam AAA St. Albert Raiders are represented by 11 players on the Zone 5 team.

Ten grapplers from the Lorne Akins Crush wrestling team also qualified for the Games.

The Bellerose Bulldogs will roll out the welcome mat Friday night for the Edmonton zone high school cheerleading championships.

The competition starts at 7 p.m. and the awards ceremony goes at 9 p.m. at Bellerose Composite High School.

Admission is $5.

In the co-ed division the Bulldogs are up against the Austin O’Brien Crusaders, Eastglen Blue Devils and Victoria.

The large squad division consists of the O’Leary Spartans, Harry Ainlay Titans, Lillian Osborne and Salisbury Sabres.

The small squad division features the Oscar Romero Ravens, Austin O’Brien, Bev Facey Falcons, Jasper Place Rebels, McNally Tigers, Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds, St. Francis Xavier Rams, Strathcona Lords and W.P. Wagner Warriors.

The winners advance to the March 2-3 provincials in Brooks.

Also performing at provincials are junior high cheer teams from Elmer S. Gish, Ecole Secondaire Saint Marguerite d’Youville, William D. Cuts and Sir George Simpson.

Entries are being accepted for the second annual Canadian Progress Club three-on-three pond hockey championship March 3 at Lacombe Lake Park.

The event goes from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Included in the $125 entry fee are team jerseys, lunch and the beer gardens.

Teams are guaranteed a minimum of four games.

All fundraising efforts are designed to assist three local charities: Camp Warwa, Uncles & Aunts at Large and Special Olympics.
