The sixth win in nine games for the St. Albert Sabres was Wednesday’s 4-1 decision against the Spruce Grove Saints at Akinsdale Arena.
Ethan Lazaro struck twice in the first period and added two assists as the Sabres improved to 15-4-5 in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.
Matteo Gennaro and affiliate Zach Webb also scored and Patrick Dea stopped 32 shots against the Saints (5-18-1).
Sunday the Sabres host the Sherwood Park Flyers (18-3-3) at 1:15 p.m. The Sabres trail the second-place Flyers by four points in the nitro north division.
Meanwhile, Gennaro and defenceman Brendan Kallis will represent the Sabres at the 22nd annual Alberta Major Bantam AAA Hockey League all-star game today in Fort Saskatchewan. Game time is 1 p.m. at the Jubilee Recreation Centre.
Gennaro leads the Sabres with 21 goals and 36 points in 22 games. Kallis has 14 assists in 24 games.
Five St. Albert players combined for 32 points in nine games for the gold-medal-winning University of Alberta ringette team at the Canadian University Challenge Cup last week in London, Ont.
Forward/centre Nikki Andruchow, forwards Sydney Bokenfohr and Shannon Jelec and defensive players Rachelle Davies and Nikki Stadnyk contributed to the first national university championship in team history. Alberta won bronze and silver in eight previous trips to nationals.
Alberta finished 6-1 in the tier 1 round robin and in the playoffs defeated the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees 5-2 in the semifinal and the Mount Royal University Canadians 4-1 in the final.
Alberta’s only loss was 3-2 against Mount Royal in the second game of the round robin.
Meanwhile, Alberta hosts its third annual Ringette Scores On Cancer tournament Jan. 27-29 at the West Edmonton Mall Ice Palace for teams in the U10 novice, U12 petite and U14 tween divisions. Last year the tournament raised $91,500 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation and the goal this year is to surpass the $100,000 mark.

The last game before the exam break for the St. Albert Skyhawks in metro Edmonton premier women’s basketball tips off Monday at 4 p.m. against the Salisbury Sabres in Sherwood Park.
The game was rescheduled from Dec. 19, when Salisbury was unable to put a team on the floor because of injuries.
In league play the Skyhawks are undefeated in three games as the No. 1-ranked 3A high school team in Alberta. Salisbury lost its only game, 73-26 to the Archbishop Jordan Scots (3-0).
The two-time reigning provincial champion Skyhawks raised their overall record to 10-4 after going 2-1 last week in Hawaii against teams from the Aloha State. The margins of victories were by 30 and 35 points. Playing without Grade 12 standout Kendall Lydon in the line-up, out with a lower body injury, the Skyhawks lost by two points against an undefeated division one team.
The Paul Kane Blues advanced to the medal round at the 44th annual BRIT Bedford Road basketball tournament in Saskatoon with a nail-bitter victory Thursday against the Michael A. Riffel Royals.
The 2011 metro Edmonton premier men’s champions defeated the Regina high school team 55-52 for their ninth win in 13 games. With five minutes to play the Royals led 41-40.
In today’s semifinal the Blues play Friday’s winner between the Jasper Place Rebels and the defending champion St. George’s Saints of Vancouver.
The next league game for the Blues after the exam break is Feb. 1 against the St. Francis Xavier Rams at 4:45 p.m. at Paul Kane.
In the 4A provincial rankings the Rams are listed second and the Blues are sixth.
