Nine members of the Red Willow Badminton Club served up medal-winning performances at the Alberta 55-Plus Winter Games last week in Calgary.
Jean Folinsbee, Anne Emberly, Rosalynn Thompson, Bob Stevenson, Henry Fenwick, Norm Carruthers and Mike Rasmussen represented Zone 5 and Nancy Cyr and Barb Biggs competed for the Edmonton zone team.
Folinsbee and Emberly were gold medallists in 65-plus women’s doubles.
Folinsbee also teamed up with Fenwick for gold in 65-plus mixed doubles.
Silver medallists were Stevenson in 75-plus men’s and mixed, Thompson in 55-plus women’s and Cyr in 75-plus women’s.
Bronze medallists included Carruthers and Fenwick in 65-plus men’s, Emberly and Carruthers in 65-plus mixed, Rasmussen in 55-plus men’s and Biggs in 55-plus mixed.
Zone 5 also won the team gold medal for badminton over the seven other participating zones.
A strong St. Albert contingent played a major role for the Olympian Swim Club winning the overall combined title of 2013 Western Canadian Champions at the Best of the West meet last weekend in Saskatoon.
More than half of the 30 Olympians at westerns were from St. Albert, where they got their start at Fountain Park Recreation Centre.
Sunday night the Olympian club was second in overall points going into the session and came out on top as both the women’s and men’s relay teams placed first in their respective 400 medley relays. It was the first time the Olympian club won the overall team championship at westerns.
The Olympian club also took home the women’s team championship banner for scoring the most points on the women’s side of the meet.
Podium finishers from St. Albert are as follows:
Emily Flowers (16): first in 4x100 medley relay, 4x100 free relay; second in 4x200 free relay, 100 back, 50 back; third in 200 free and 200 back.
Georgia Kidd (14): first in 4x100 free relay; second in 100 free, 200 free, 50 free, 4x200 free relay; third in 50 back and 100 back.
Mackenzie Lubberding (17): first in 4x100 medley relay.
Paige Kremer (16): first in 50 fly, 50 free, 100 free, 4x100 free relay, 4x100 medley relay; silver in 4x200 free relay; third in 100 back.
Also competing from St. Albert were Aiden Friesen (15), Annika Kamminga (16), Berkley Nowlan (17), Cheyenne Lindsay (14), Emily Decoyers (15), Julia Marchland (15), Mackenzie Flowers (13), Mikhail Lindsay (14), Gillian Arraial (15), Kathryn Doyle (13), Monica McDowell (16) and Stephanie Churcher (15).
The St. Albert swimmers at westerns are ranked top five in Alberta in their respective events.
