Three players from the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres were selected in the Western Hockey League’s bantam draft Thursday.
Sabres captain Jayden Platz was picked by the Edmonton Oil Kings in the second round, 33rd overall, as the 12th defenceman taken in the draft.
Right-winger Garrett Clegg was grabbed by the Prince Albert Raiders in the seventh round (138th overall) and netminder Mitchell Reidy was snapped up by the Spokane Chiefs in the 10th round (207th overall).
The six-foot-two, 183-pound Platz was the only second-year Sabre on the team last season. He registered three goals, 12 assists and 32 penalty minutes in 23 games for the third-place 16-12-5 Sabres in the nitro north standings.
Clegg was the Sabres’ top scorer with 26 goals and 39 points in 32 games. The five-foot-10, 155-pound skater also ranked second in team PIMs with 46.
Reidy’s 2.36 GAA was ninth best in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League. The six-foot-three, 152-pound goalie compiled a 9-5-3 record, .916 save percentage and three shutouts.
Sunday the St. Albert Miners travel to Airdrie to play the Rockyview Knights in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.
Game time is 3:30 p.m.
The Knights were 1-1 and the Miners were 1-0 before their respective games on Friday. The Miners hosted the South Edmonton Warriors (0-1) but the score was unavailable at press time.
The season opener for the Miners was Sunday’s 7-5 decision against the host Sherwood Park Outlaws.
Darren Kinnear’s second goal and fourth point at 2:18 of the third period made it 7-4.
Nick Petz also potted a pair and Brett Reynar, Sean Reid and Jordan Cornfield notched singles. In net was Matt Hiebert.
The 2014 Presidents’ Cup national bronze medallists and provincial champions finished 27-3 overall and their only losses were three in a row at nationals to snap a 26-game winning streak.
The Paul Kane Blues have two matches on tap next week in metro Edmonton high school rugby.
The last division two pool A game for the lady Blues (3-0) before the playoffs is Tuesday against the Memorial Marauders (0-2). Kickoff is 4:45 p.m. in Stony Plain.
Last year’s division two champions are coming off a resounding 89-0 victory over the M.E. Lazerte Voyageurs (0-2) at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club.
The Voyageurs dressed only 17 players and it showed as they barely crossed the halfway line.
Sydney De La Mare was credited with three tries for a team-high 11 scores.
The Blues will scrum down against the second-place pool B team in the May 26 semifinals. The final is May 28 at Ellerslie Rugby Park.
Wednesday the Paul Kane men battle the Bellerose Bulldogs at 4:45 p.m. in St. Albert.
Paul Kane is 2-0 and Bellerose is 1-1 in the division two/three pool A table.
Both teams had games snowed out this week and they will be rescheduled before the playoffs start May 20.
Registrations are being accepted for the sixth annual Hawks Combo Camp at the SkyDome.
The Aug. 24-26 camp offers volleyball in the mornings and basketball in the afternoons. Players can register for one sport individually or attend the entire day and compete in both sports.
The camp is designed for males and females 12 to 15 years old for preparation for school volleyball and basketball club team tryouts.
Krista Zubick, a St. Albert Catholic High School alumna and former Alberta Pandas’ volleyball standout currently playing in France, is returning as one of the camp instructors.
The fee is $100 for one session (nine hours of instruction) or $180 for both (18 hours of instruction).
