The fifth win in a row for the resurging Paul Kane Blues in high school women’s basketball was 73-53 against the No. 7-ranked 4A Archbishop Jordan Scots on Monday in St. Albert.

The Blues outscored the Scots 27-10 in the fourth quarter in the metro Edmonton premier conference contest.

Co-captain Josee Larson sank a team-high 23 points, as the Blues improved to 3-5 in premier and 12-6 overall. The Scots are 5-3 in league play.

Sydney Hurlburt added 16 points and Kaitlyn Hunder had 12 for the unranked 4A Blues.

The next league game is tonight against the winless Salisbury Sabres at 6:15 p.m. in Sherwood Park

Last weekend in Stony Plain the Blues won their second tournament of the season by defeating the Ardrossan Bisons 63-42 in the final. Hurlburt led all scorers with 28 points and Larson chipped in with 15 against the metro Edmonton city conference team.

The Blues advanced to the final with wins of 73-35 over the R.F. Staples of Westlock and 65-42 over Hunting Hills of Red Deer.

The St. Albert Skyhawks settled for fourth best in the eight-team junior women’s division at the Harry Ainlay Titans Tri-Prov Tournament last weekend.

In the third-place playoff the Skyhawks had a tough time finishing their shots in the fourth quarter and lost 42-36 to the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs of Calgary. Andrea Durocher was the Skyhawks’ player of the game.

The 2012 metro Edmonton premier junior women’s champions tipped off the tournament with a 39-32 win over the Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds and in the semifinals lost 74-30 to the Cardston Cougars. Players of the game were Abby Schneider against the Thunderbirds and Nathalie Hajek against Cardston.

Carly Zimmer was the Skyhawks’ tournament all-star.

In league play the Skyhawks improved to 8-1 in Monday’s 62-35 win over the Salisbury Sabres (2-6) at the SkyDome.

Tuesday the Skyhawks played the Archbishop Jordan Scots (8-1) in Sherwood Park, but the score was unavailable at press time.

The last meet before the Provincial Junior Olympics for the Lorne Akins Crush junior high wrestling team was the 29th annual Paperweight Invitational Tournament on Saturday at the University of Alberta Butterdome.

The Crushers were represented by 15 grapplers and 75 schools were entered.

Mckenna Marthiensen finished third, Chance March placed fourth, Keira de Bruijn was fifth and in sixth place were Danielle Riege, Sarah Weihmann and Sam Lee.

Provincials are Feb. 16 in Hinton.

This season marks the 35th anniversary for the perennial medal contenders at provincials in the team and individual categories. Last year the Crushers were awarded 21 medals, two short of the team’s record haul at provincials.

Tickets are on sale for Fire on Ice, the Feb. 16 hockey game between the Edmonton Oilers Alumni and Edmonton firefighters at 7 p.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena.

Tickets are $20 and are available at www.ticketweb.ca.

All proceeds go to Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

Fun games and raffles begin at 4 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m., followed by a skate with the pros for the kids.

The Oilers alumni team includes Brian Benning, Rob Brown, Chris Joseph, Dave Lumley and Jason Strudwick.

Al Hamilton and Ron Low are the special guest coaches.
