The St. Albert Flyers extended their undefeated streak to eight games in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League in Thursday’s 4-1 win over the visiting KC Centennials.
Matt Quartel scored once and added two assists as the Flyers (14-5-5) regained top spot in the north division.
The Flyers’ forward had one goal and one assist in 23 games prior to the three-point night.
Kieran Arcand, Ethan Lazaro and Kole Bryks also found the back of the net. Shots were 34-33 for the Centennials (10-10-2). In net was Pat Dea (8-4-2, 1.93 GAA).
The Flyers skate today in Camrose against the Vikings (7-7-10) at 2:45 p.m.
Sunday the Flyers host the south-division Rockyview Raiders (12-10-2) at 1:30 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The Northern Alberta Curling Association senior 50-plus men’s and women’s playdowns are underway at the Thistle for St. Albert curlers.
In the Thursday afternoon opening draw the St. Albert rink of Wade White, third Doug McLennan, second Dan Holowaychuk and lead George Parsons pulled off a 5-4 win over Russ LeMessurier of Spruce Grove.
The only steal in the game was a single by White in seven to make it 5-3. LeMessurier replied with one in eight and White blanked the next end before running his opponent out of rocks in the 10th.
Thursday night White whipped Dave Olsen of the Thistle 9-4 in only six ends. White counted three with the hammer in the second, fourth and sixth ends for a berth in the A semifinals Friday afternoon against Brad Hannah of the Saville Sports Centre, with local curlers Gary Greening at third and Don McKenzie at second in the line-up. The score was unavailable at press time.
The A final in the 16-team draw was Friday night. The B final is tonight at 7 p.m. and the C final is Sunday at 2 p.m.
The senior women’s playdowns is a four-team round-robin involving Saville Sports Centre rinks skipped by Cathy King, the defending Canadian champion, and Deb Santos, as well as Cathy Craig of Jasper Place and Dianne Bowen of Spruce Grove.
Local curlers Jackie Rae Greening and Diana Backer are playing for Santos and Aimee Branting is with the Craig rink.
King and Greening, along with McKenzie, were among the inaugural six inductees to the St. Albert Curling Club’s wall of fame in 2011.

The winning men’s and women’s teams advance to provincials, Feb. 13 to 17 at the Granite.
Nationals are March 16 to 24 in Summerside, P.E.I and worlds are April 13 to 20 in Fredericton, N.B.
Back by popular demand is the Stadnyk Frozen Ring outdoor ringette tournament.
The 24-team event runs Feb. 8 to 10 at the Willoughby and Flagstone rinks.
The inaugural tournament last year featured five St. Albert teams and the Edmonton Chaos in the U10 novice division. Chaos shut out the St. Albert Fire Rings 6-0 in the final. Both teams won three games each to reach the championship match.
This year the tournament added U12 A, B and C petite teams to its U10 format.
The tournament is named after Glenn Stadnyk, the former longtime St. Albert Ringette Association president.
Registrations are being accepted for the third annual Canadian Progress Club Pond Hockey Championship, Feb. 23 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Lacombe Park lake.
There is a 32-team limit, and teams will be registered on a first come, first serve basis.
The $200 entry fee per team includes a minimum four games, team jerseys and a gift bag.
Monies raised will go towards Camp Warwa, Uncles & Aunts at Large and Special Olympics.
