The St. Albert Skyhawks caged the Leduc Tigers for the second time in a week in the battle of top-ranked 3A teams in high school men’s basketball.

Despite having only eight players in the line-up, the Skyhawks beat the Tigers 80-74 in the final of the Beaumont tournament last weekend. Dayn Scaber scored 24 points for the No. 9-ranked Skyhawks against the No. 6-ranked Tigers.

The Skyhawks also posted wins of 97-47 against Spruce Grove and 75-45 against West Central of Rocky Mountain House. Roberto Sanchez-Enkerlin and Scaber sank 17 points apiece against Spruce Grove and Sanchez-Enkerlin dropped 28 on West Central.

Last week in the metro Edmonton premier conference, the Skyhawks rallied from an early 15-point deficit to defeat the Tigers 93-86 in Leduc.

The Skyhawks are 3-3 in premier and 12-8 overall. The Tigers are 1-4 in premier.

The next rankings were expected to be released Friday.

League play resumes Feb. 4, when the Skyhawks visit the St. Francis Xavier Rams (7-0) at 4:45 p.m.

Also on tap for the Skyhawks is their eight-team tournament Feb. 15-16.

Meanwhile, the lady Skyhawks host their invitational tournament Jan. 31 to Feb. 2 at the SkyDome and Morinville Community High School. The 16-team draw features the Morinville Wolves, Miles Macdonell of Winnipeg, James Mahoney of Saskatoon, Bishop O’Bryne, W.P Wagner, Bowness, St. Joseph, Ernest Manning, St. Francis Xavier, Bishop Carroll, Chestermere, Grande Prairie, Edmonton Christian Lions, Wetaskiwin Sabres and Bishop Grandin.

The Skyhawks are 6-0 in league play as the only 3A team in the metro premier conference. The 2010 and 2012 premier champions and three-time reigning 3A provincial gold medallists are 16-0 this season. The No. 1-ranked 3A team in the province is undefeated in 24 games, dating back to late February of last year.

Tickets are on sale for Fire on Ice, the Feb. 16 hockey game between the Edmonton Oilers Alumni and Edmonton firefighters at 7 p.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena.

General admission tickets are $20 and are available at www.ticketweb.ca.

All proceeds go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Fun games and raffles begin at 4 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m., followed by a skate with the pros for the kids.

The Oilers alumni features Brian Benning, Rob Brown, Chris Joseph, Dave Lumley, Jason Strudwick and many more.

Special guest coaches are Al Hamilton and Ron Low.

The St. Albert Flyers maintained their first-place status in the north division in Tuesday’s 4-4 tie against the visiting Spruce Grove Saints.

Tristen Gavin, Kole Bryks, Cam Mazur and Ethan Lazaro scored as the Flyers (13-5-5) extended their undefeated streak to seven games in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

Lazaro also added two assists as the short-handed Flyers blew a two-goal lead late in the game. The last-place Saints (5-15-1) fired the equalizer with 15 seconds to play. The Flyers were outshot 18-11 in the third and 43-32 overall. Tyler Boe (5-1-3, 2.70 GAA) was in net.

The Flyers are 3-0-1 in January after going 5-2 last month.

The Flyers return to action Thursday against the KC Centennials (10-8-2) at 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

First place was up for grabs in the north division Friday, when the St. Albert Lady Raiders played the Lloydminster Ice Cats in the Alberta Major Bantam Female Hockey League.

The score from Lloydminster was unavailable at press time.

One point separated the Ice Cats (10-6-2) and Raiders (10-6-1) in the standings.

Last weekend Jamie Jones recorded two goals and one assist and Carly Chikie and Ally Short added singles in the 4-1 win over the Edmonton Lightning (6-13-2) in St. Albert. In net was Hannah Clark (6-1-1, 1.38 GAA).

Next weekend the Raiders travel to Red Deer to play the Chiefs (11-5-3) at 2:15 p.m. Saturday and Sunday they host the south division-leading Rocky Mountain Raiders (17-0-1) at 1:30 p.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena.
