The Bellerose Bulldogs were victorious in their first regular season home game in metro Edmonton city conference basketball.
The lady Bulldogs pounded the John Paul II Patriots of Fort Saskatchewan 96-22 in pool B action Wednesday in St. Albert after going 0-4 in exhibition play.
Last season the Bulldogs and Patriots missed the playoffs with records of 1-8 and 0-9, respectively, in the conference.
The next game for the Bulldogs is Jan. 8 against the host Archbishop MacDonald Marauders at 4:45 p.m.
Meanwhile, the varsity men’s team fell to 0-4 in the premier conference in Monday’s 105-67 loss to the Leduc Tigers at Bellerose. Leduc (1-3) is the sixth-ranked 3A team in the province.
The Bulldogs resume premier play Jan. 8 against the host St. Francis Xavier Rams (5-0), ranked fourth in 4A. Tipoff is 4:45 p.m.
Last weekend the Bulldogs captured the Sabres Classic tournament title in Sherwood Park with victories of 57-52 against the J.H. Picard Pumas, 51-46 against the Paul Kane Blues and 55-53 against the J. Percy Page Panthers in the final. The first two games featured eight-minute quarters and the final was a full-length game.
The Paul Kane Blues basketball teams split Wednesday’s games in the metro Edmonton premier conference.
The lady Blues fell in overtime to the Archbishop Jordan Scots 66-58 in Sherwood Park and the varsity men’s team beat the Sturgeon Spirits 70-68 at Paul Kane.
Tiana Woyewitka’s basket in the last minute of play against the Scots sent the game into overtime tied at 54-all.
The Blues were led by Josee Larson’s four three-pointers and 25 points. Woyewitka finished the loss with 12 points and Sydney Hurlburt added nine for the Blues (1-4) against the Scots (3-2), ranked fourth in 4A.
The Blues are back on the court Jan. 9 against the St. Francis Xavier Rams (4-2) at 4:45 p.m. at Paul Kane.
The varsity men’s team rebounded smartly from blowing an 18-point halftime lead in Monday’s 70-64 loss to the St. Albert Skyhawks (2-3) to defeat the Spirits (2-3), tournament finalists as the host team at the recent Rise Up competition.
The Blues (2-3) and Spirits are unranked in 4A.
The next premier game for the Blues, the two-time defending premier champions, is Jan. 9 against the undefeated St. Francis Xavier Rams at 6:15 p.m. at Paul Kane.
The Lorne Akins Crush junior high wrestling team pounded the mats for medals during its season debut at the St. Cecilia tournament last weekend in Edmonton.
In the male division Chance March won gold, Sebastien Strembiski, Eric Gysen, Landon Logan and Sam Lee were silver medalists and Aulden Maj-Pfleger was awarded bronze.
In the female division Keira de Bruijn pinned gold, Samantha Duckworth captured silver and Bryana Perlette, Mckenna Marthiensen, Maddy Ginn and Rebecca Sunby took home bronze.
The lineup of 23 male and 14 female Crushers were among 10 teams at the meet.
The tournament’s draw master put all the wrestlers in groups with weights as close as possible.
The next tournament is the Jan. 17 all-girls’ meet in Edmonton.
This season marks the 35th anniversary for the perennial medal contenders at the Provincial Junior Olympics in the team and individual categories.
Hockey players born in 1999 are invited to join Team Canada Moose for the 22nd annual Czech Challenge Cup in Prague in August of 2013.
There are no tryouts because in previous years AA and AAA players have been competitive in the tournament.
The tournament is part of a 14-day trip through Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic through the Northern Alberta Hockey Association, a not-for-profit society, and Selects Sports Tour.
