St. Albert speed skater Tamara Oudenaarden was a multiple medal winner at the Canada Cup No. 1 long track competition last weekend at the Gaetan Boucher Oval in Quebec City. Oudenaarden won both of the women’s 500 metre races with times of 41.

Oudenaarden won both of the women’s 500 metre races with times of 41.67 and 40.78 seconds.

In the 1,000m events the Bellerose Composite High School alumna was a runner-up at 1:24.51 and placed third at 1:25.83.

Canada Cup No. 1 was the first of four of Speed Skating Canada’s long track series meets to determine national rankings for positions on the national junior and development teams. The competitions are open to junior and senior skaters who meet specific distance time standards.

Oudenaarden was an alternate skater at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver in the women's 500m, but didn’t race since all the other qualifying Canadian skaters competed.

Marc Meunier of St. Albert was the 52nd overall fastest male at the California International Marathon on Sunday in Sacramento.

The two-time reigning RunWild Leading Edge Marathon champion completed the 42.195-kilometre race in two hours, 43 minutes and 35 seconds.

It was the second fastest marathon for Meunier despite the pouring rain, 40-km per hour winds, a sore ankle and tough November training conditions.

The 13th marathon of Meunier’s career was also his eighth race and fourth marathon of the year.

Meunier, 39, will now ramp up his training program for the RunWild marathon in May.

The Paul Kane High School athletic director will also prepare for Ironman Canada in August in Whistler.

The Paul Kane Blues hooped it up in Calgary last weekend for a third-place finish in the platinum division at the 25th annual SAIT Silver Belle tournament.

The Lady Blues defeated Bishop Carroll of Calgary 77-48 to finish the tournament with two wins and one loss.

Chantal Jouan was the player of the game for the Blues with 16 points while shooting 60 per cent from the field.

Josee Larson dropped in 21 and Kaitlyn Hunder added 14. Grade 11 posts Julie Fagan and Kiara Bain also provided key rebounding and defensive efforts.

The Blues were already short two players due to illness when Sydney Hurlburt was injured early in the game.

The Blues also defeated Winston Churchill of Lethbridge 62-43 and lost 60-42 to George McDougall of Airdrie.

Meanwhile, the Blues opened their metro Edmonton premier conference schedule in Monday’s 62-51 loss to the St. Francis Xavier Rams in Edmonton.

The next game for the Blues is Monday at home against the Salisbury Sabres at 6:15 p.m.

The Paul Kane Blues lost three in a row after starting the 15th annual Mike Dea Classic tournament with an overtime win in high school men’s basketball.

The two-time defending metro Edmonton premier conference champions finished eighth in the 16-team draw in Saturday’s 66-64 loss to the Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds at the St. Francis Xavier Sports Centre.

The Blues tipped off the tournament with a 71-68 OT decision against the Catholic Central Cougars of Lethbridge, followed by losses of 80-53 to Vancouver College and 92-68 to the O’Leary Spartans.

Meanwhile, Monday’s exhibition against the Bev Facey Falcons in Sherwood Park was cancelled.

Tonight at 6:15 p.m. the Blues visit the Bellerose Bulldogs in the league opener.

Notre Dame of Calgary and the Edmonton Christian Lions were the big winners at the second annual Go Logowear Junior Basketball Tournament, hosted by the St. Albert Skyhawks last weekend.

Notre Dame defeated the M.E. Lazerte Voyageurs in the men’s final and the Lions beat the Parkland Immanuel Penguins in the women’s final.

The Skyhawks finished 2-1 for third place in the women’s bracket and men’s team was 0-2.

The tournament provides junior teams competitive games before league play commences.
