The Edmonton Oil Kings host their sixth annual pre-season invitational tournament this weekend at Northstar Hyundai Arena. The 2012 Western Hockey League champions play the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday and the Red Deer Rebels on Sunday.

The 2012 Western Hockey League champions play the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday and the Red Deer Rebels on Sunday. Game times are 7 p.m.

Saturday’s tournament schedule includes Red Deer versus the Prince George Cougars at 11 a.m. and the Medicine Hat Tigers against the Calgary Hitmen at 3 p.m.

Sunday at 11 a.m. Prince George tangles with Medicine Hat and at 3 p.m. Swift Current battles Calgary.

Tickets are $10 per game or $25 for a day pass. All tickets are general admission and are available at the door.

The St. Albert Senior Cardinals dropped the opening game in the Alberta West Central Baseball Association final Monday in Westlock.

The Red Lions blanked the Cardinals 4-0 in the best-of-three series.

Game two goes Thursday at 8 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.

Game three, if needed, will be played in Westlock next week.

In league play the Red Lions (14-3) and Cardinals (12-3) finished first and second, respectively.

The Cardinals posted wins of 2-0 and 5-3 against the Red Lions, plus a 6-2 decision in the annual St. Albert 30-plus tournament. The Red Lions beat the Cardinals 5-4 in the first game of the season.

In the semifinals the Cardinals rallied from a 4-3 loss to knock off the third-place Spruce Grove Eagles (9-6) by scores of 4-3 and 10-4 and the Red Lions swept the fourth-place Fort Saskatchewan Red Sox (7-7) 16-2 and 5-0.

The last major playoff triumph for the Cardinals was winning the league’s B-side championship in 2010.

On September 8 the St. Albert Minor Football Association is celebrating 50 years of football in the city.

The theme of the day is SAMFA’s Got Talent.

SAMFA invites all past St. Albert minor football coaches, board members, volunteers and players to join the current members for the daytime and evening events.

The City of St. Albert is providing SAMFA financial support and assistance to help put on the festivities.

The Capital District Minor Football Association is expected to scheduled games at Riel Recreation Park involving all the St. Albert’s teams in atom (Buccaneers versus Vikings), peewee (Colts versus Riders) and bantam (Fury versus 49ers).

Starting at 12 p.m. the national anthem will be sung, Mayor Nolan Crouse is expected to speak, the anniversary cake will be cut and the players will participate in a commemorative photo marking the 50th anniversary.

A free hotdog lunch for players and spectators will be offered from 12 to 2 p.m.

There will also be raffles and 50/50 draws and two jumpy things (castle and obstacle course) will be available at 10 a.m. for children to enjoy.

SAMFA is also offering a fun pub night for adults at the Skybox Grill in Servus Credit Union Place, featuring live musical entertainment and a karaoke competition. Tickets are $10 and they can be purchased from any team manager or by emailing Angela Kerr at [email protected]. Silent auction items will also be up for grabs.

Celebrity guests are also expected to be in attendance at Riel Recreation Park and Skybox Grill.
