Morgan Christensen’s undefeated streak in the 200 metres ended at the Legion Canadian Youth Track and Field Championships last weekend at Charlottetown, P.E.I.

Christensen, 16, had not lost an indoor or outdoor 200m race since the 2010 Legion nationals until the Grade 11 Bellerose Composite High School student finished fourth at 25.16 seconds in the U18 section 2 final. The winner was Ally Christiani of Phoenix Athletics at 24.87.

In the 100m section 2 final the Edmonton Olympic Track and Field Club athlete pulled her calf muscle and finished in last place at 13.70.

A car accident two weeks prior to nationals sapped Christensen’s speed and strength at her third consecutive appearance at the Legion meet representing Alberta.

The St. Albert Angels completed the U18 Women’s Fastpitch Canadian Championship in Montreal with two wins in nine games.

The second Alberta seed at nationals placed 14th out of 17 teams at 2-6 and in the playoff round last Saturday lost 7-0 to the Mississauga N. Tigers, the No. 2 Ontario team in the tournament.

The Angels posted wins of 8-7 against the Brantford Bobcats, the No. 3 Ontario team, and 9-0 against the winless Prince Edward Island Heat in the last game before the playoffs.

The Angels roster consisted of two St. Albert players – pitcher Mackenzie Bender and third-baseman Amanda Dunnigan – as well as players from Edmonton, Sherwood Park, Elk Point, Calgary, Hanna and the injured Tori Gadoury of Calahoo.

Bender batted a team-leading .556 in eight games. Three of her 10 hits were doubles. She also scored four runs.

Bender (1-4, 1.17 ERA) also pitched in seven games. She started five and went the distance in three while logging 30 innings of work. She struck out 20 while giving up 11 runs, five earned, and allowed 32 hits and three walks.

Dunnigan hit .150 in seven games, with three hits and two RBIs for the provincial finalists.

The team’s batting average in eight games was .214.

Alberta was also represented at nationals by the provincial champion Calgary Kaizan and the Edmonton-based Alberta Wildcats Warriors. Kaizan ended up in a three-way tie for eighth place at 4-4 and the Warriors finished tied for 15th at 1-7.

The Warriors’ line-up featured catcher Stephanie Stephen of St. Albert and centerfielder Marley Broda of Sturgeon County.

Stephen batted .269 in eight games, with seven hits and two runs scored.
