Ninety athletes from St. Albert and area are competing for Zone 5 Black Gold/Yellowhead at the Alberta Summer Games this weekend in Lethbridge.

Ninety athletes from St. Albert and area are competing for Zone 5 Black Gold/Yellowhead at the Alberta Summer Games this weekend in Lethbridge.

The bi-annual sporting event for youths ages 11 to 17 in 15 sports consists of more than 3,000 athletes from eight zones in Alberta.

The medal hopefuls from St. Albert, Calahoo, Legal, Morinville, Riviere Qui Barre and Sturgeon County are listed as follows:

St. Albert

• Athletics – U15 female: Emma Curle, Madelyn Curle, Hannah Gorgichuk, Sydney Parkinson; U15 male: Emmett Clarkin, Kelly Repato, Matt Schaaf; U17 female: Brooklyn Failing, Hayley Francois; U17 male: Tyler Lazarenko.

• Baseball – Riley Fisher, Mason Libich, Cam Mazur, Tanner McLean-Poll, Erik Sabrowski, Jackson Wark.

• Basketball – female: Jamie Bain, Rachel McKenzie, Brielle Wise; male: Thomas Laxdal.

• BMX – 13-14 female: Cayleigh Van Staalduinen; 15 female: Sarah Peacock; 15-16 male: Sean Peacock.

• Football – Nick Cowan, Andrew Johnson, Jared McCoshen, Rory O’Donovan, Shaydon Philip, Kieran Porter, Connor Pytel, Logan Tait-Vanderheide, Seth Waselenchuk.

The deadline to register online of for the annual St. Albert Triathlon is Aug. 7.

As of Tuesday, 121 competitors had entered the Aug. 12 event through EventsOnline.ca.

Last year 132 triathletes completed the sprint distance (750-metre swim, 20-kilometre and five-km run) and 26 finished the try-a-tri (250m swim, 10-km bike and 2.5-km run). Seven sprint relay teams also went the distance.

Max King of Sherwood Park was the top racer with a time of one hour, one minute and 28 seconds.

The fastest female was Wietske Eikelenboom of St. Albert at 1:10:29 for 12th place overall.

The triathlon starts at 7 a.m. at Fountain Park Recreation Centre. The awards ceremony begins at approximately 11 a.m.

The St. Albert Roadrunners and Triathlon Club is hosting the Triathlon Alberta-sanctioned race.
