St. Albert’s two representatives at the Canadian track and field Olympic trials in Calgary on the weekend failed to make the team for the 2012 London games.

Niki Oudenaarden finished fifth in the women’s javelin with a throw of 48.90 metres, about 3 metres out of third place.

Rachel Francis finished sixth in the women’s 800 metres in two minutes 9.15 seconds, about 1 seconds off the podium. Francis ran a 2:06.12 in the semifinal, a time that would have won the final but all eight finalists were more than two seconds slower than in the semifinal.

Cardinals in B.C.

The bantam AAA St. Albert Cardinals baseball team made it to the final at a tournament in Cloverdale, B.C., over the weekend, only to lose 4-3 to the Victoria Red Eagles in five innings. Rainy weather forced some changes to the tournament format including two-hour time limits on games.

The team earned wins in the first two matches racking up a score of 8-2 against Whalley Jr Little League and then defeating the Aldergrove Dodgers 9-3.

On the final day of play, the Cardinals won 3-2 over the Cloverdale Red Spurs in five innings to head into the final undefeated.

Coach Dave Maguire said that regardless of the outcome, the team accomplished their goal of playing against teams they hadn’t battled before and putting themselves in playoff situations going into provincials.

The midget AAA Cardinals also got hit with rain in B.C. when they travelled to the 2012 Trail Jays/Safety Net Security Summer Classic tournament in Trail. In round robin play the Cardinals lost their first game to the Northeast 49ers out of the U.S. by a score of 14-2. The Cardinals couldn’t get a run in against the Penticton Tigers, losing 7-0, but then bounced back to defeat the home team Trail Jays 9-3. The remainder of the tournament was rained out.

The team is having a better season so far this year sitting with more wins than they had at this time in 2011. Coach CJ Jayasekera said he is excited about where the team is at in terms of its progress.
