Bellerose Bulldogs alumnus James Comeau will huddle up in the 13th annual East West Bowl on May 9 at McGill University in Montreal.

Comeau is one of three St. Francis Xavier X-Men selected to play in the CIS football prospects game, featuring for the most part players eligible for the 2016 CFL draft, and is the only Alberta product on the east all-star team.

The six-foot-two, 300-pound centre was a team captain in 2014. The engineering student started in all eight regular season games and played every snap.

Comeau’s strengths, according to his X-Men bio, include “a very high football IQ, and his hard work both on and off the field translate into consistency for the offence and leadership to his teammates.”

Comeau was the 2011 recipient of the Lee Grant Memorial Award, presented to the senior Bulldog who demonstrates outstanding qualities of fair play, sportsmanship, leadership and community involvement.

Comeau’s brother, John, a defensive lineman, recently signed with the X-Men, based in Antigonish, NS.

John’s teammate on the Bulldogs, offensive lineman Spencer Unrau, signed with the Acadia Axemen in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

Canadian welterweight Sheldon Westcott of St. Albert lost a unanimous decision to Pawel Pawlak last Saturday at a UFC Fight Night event in Krakow, Poland.

Westcott’s pro record is now 8-3-1.

Westcott, 30, was the aggressor in the first round but was tagged with two hard knees early in the second stanza and was later taken down by Pawlak. The Lodz, Poland fighter controlled the third round.

All three judges scored the bout 29-28 for Pawlak (11-1).

It was Westcott’s first fight since losing to Team Canada teammate Elias (The Spartan) Theodorou in The Ultimate Fighter Nations middleweight final last April in Quebec City.

The Paul Kane High School alumnus is the co-owner of the Complete Fitness and Martial Arts gym in Campbell Business Park.
