St. Albert Miners racked up their fifth win in six games with an 8-4 decision Saturday over the Okotoks Raiders in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League. The Miners led 3-1 after the first period and 5-2 going into the third at Northstar Hyundai Arena.

Captain Nate Schmidt scored three goals and added three assists for the two-time defending senior B provincial champions.

Graedon Cornfield potted a pair and Jordan Cornfield, Sean Reid and Richard Barnes notched singles.

All-star netminder Dave Marrese also picked up three assists against Okotoks, last year’s pennant winners and 2010 provincial finalists.

The next game for the Miners (6-3) is this Saturday against the winless Calgary Mountaineers at 8:30 p.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena.

Aymar Sigue of St. Albert is playing for Canada at the Copa Mexico de Naciones Sub-15 soccer tournament this week in Ciudad de, Mexico.

The Cameroon-born Sigue is a forward with the FC Edmonton Reserve team. He attended Vincent J. Maloney School last season and was among 11 players named to FC Edmonton’s residency program at St. Joseph Composite High School. The reserve team will play in the Alberta Major Soccer League.

Canada is one of eight teams participating in the Mexico tournament, with group matches against Mexico, Nigeria and Chile. Colombia, Costa Rica, Spain and the United States form the opposite group. The final is Sunday.

The tournament marks Canada’s first project for 1997-born players eligible for the biennial CONCACAF & FIFA competitions in the U17 category until 2013 (with 1996 born players) and the U20 category until 2017.

No experience is required for competitors in the downhill race and/or push race. The skill levels are junior I for six- to nine-year-olds and beginner, intermediate and advanced levels up to age 21.

In the downhill race participates go head-to-head down one of the fastest sections of Woodlands Road.

The push race course features a four-kilometre paved trail system winding and twisting its way through the city.

Full-face helmets and slide gloves are required. Rules are posted on www.stalbert.ca/longboard-competition.

Registration forms are available at local junior high and high schools, Community and Protective Services at St. Albert Place and the City of St. Albert website.

The cost is $22 for one race and $40 for both races.
