The President’s Cup winners at the St. Albert Curling Club failed to make the semifinals at the 49th annual Tournament of Champions at the Jasper Place Curling Club.

Rinks skipped by Christina Monk, Dale Briske and Doug McLennan were eliminated in the B bracket in the double knockout event

Monk lost two in a row in the women’s draw after rattling off two straight victories. Monk’s second loss was 7-5 and it featured a six-ender in the fourth by Crestwood to make it 7-2.

Briske lost his first game in the men’s draw, then strung two wins together before bowing out 7-6 to Sherwood Park. A steal of two in seven by Briske tied the score at six apiece.

McLennan finished 1-2 in the mixed draw after dropping a 5-2 decision to the Saville Sports Centre. A five-ender in two by Saville was the difference. Saville went on to defeat Crestwood in the final.

The competition featured 12 Edmonton and area club champions in the three divisions.

The Zone 5 Black Gold teams at the Ringette Canada AA championships fell short of advancing into the medal round in their respective age divisions last weekend in Burnaby, B.C.

The U16 Havoc and U19 Grit teams were eliminated in the round of eight.

The Havoc roster featured eight St. Albert players and the Grit had three St. Albert players.

The Pursuit and Vitality teams from Calgary and the Edmonton Elite also represented Alberta in the U16 division.

The Central Alberta Sting and Calgary competed in the U19 division.

This was the first year nationals expanded the number of teams to 20 in U16 and 18 in U19.

The St. Albert Men’s Soccer League added a ninth team for its 32nd outdoor season.

The yet to be named entry is made up of mostly masters players.

Already in the fold are the Rummies, Chester City, St. Albert United, GSE, CSKA Blues FC, Crossfire, SA City and Arsenal.

The Rummies have replaced the AC Youngboys in the fixtures. The Rummies won an unprecedented 13 playoff cups and 11 provincial medals before taking a leave of absence after competing in their 17th straight division one final in 2009, a 4-0 loss to Summit FC.

Last year the Blues beat United 2-1 for the playoff cup.

League play starts May 1.
