The St. Albert Women’s Soccer League finals kick off Sunday at 5 p.m. at Forest Park Field.
The playoff pairings are Mavericks 09 (15-0) and Morinville Ladies (12-2-1) in division one and Mavericks 95 (6-8-2) and SA Blaze (8-6-1) in division two.
Mavericks 09 and the Blaze are the defending champions.
Morinville hasn’t defeated the Mavericks 09 since 2011 in a game that decided the division one pennant and Tier 4 provincial berth. The winless streak includes last year’s 2-0 loss in the final and 4-1 and 6-0 setbacks this year.
Last weekend’s semifinal scores were Mavericks 09 4-1 over Cosmos FC (6-6-3) and Morinville downed the Lady Titans (8-6) by a score of 3-1.
The semifinal was the first match for Mavericks 09 since going 1-2 as the fourth-place team at the Tier 3 championship in Calgary, where last year’s provincial gold medallists suffered their first loss after 35 straight wins since the 2013 SAWSL division one final.
The Blaze put themselves in position to repeat with a 4-0 decision over the Devils (4-10-2) and Mavericks 95 were awarded a 3-0 forfeit win against the Snipe (6-8-2).
Last year, the Blaze recorded its fifth win of the season knocking off Gini’s for the division two title.
SAWSL is celebrating its 20th anniversary and Mavericks 95 was one of the original teams.
The top two teams in the St. Albert Men’s Soccer League square-off in Sunday’s playoff cup final.
Kickoff is 3 p.m. between GSE (Green Street Elite), the three-time defending champion, and SV Spurs at Victoria Soccer Park.
In league play, GSE (14-0-1) beat the Spurs (9-5-1) 1-0 and 2-0 before the teams battled to a 2-2 draw.
Thursday’s semifinals saw GSE edge Chester City 1-0 on Terry Esposito’s goal and the Spurs needed penalty kicks to defeat Prestige Worldwide after a 2-2 stalemate in regulation time.
Chester City (9-7-3) and Prestige (10-8-1) will play in Sunday’s 1 p.m. third-place game at Victoria.
Prestige and Chester City finished first and second, respectively, in the five-team round-robin playoff to determine who would play GSE and the Spurs in the semifinals.
Last year, GSE throttled Chester City 7-2 in the final and SA United knocked off the Spurs 3-2 for third place.
