Mavericks 09 and the Devils will defend their playoff cups Sunday in the St. Albert Women’s Soccer League.
Kickoff times are 5 p.m. at Forest Park field between Mavericks 09 (13-0) and the Morinville Ladies (7-5-1) in division one and the Devils (9-4) versus St. Albert Blaze (4-9) in division two.
In last year’s finals, Mavericks 09 blanked Morinville 6-0 to go 14-0 on the season and the Devils knocked off the undefeated Cosmos FC 6-0 to finish 13-4.
The championship for Mavericks 09 was the third in a row and fourth in five years.
REX soccer
Six members of the St. Albert Impact U15 Tier I (2002) female team are honing their skills with the Alberta Regional EXCEL (REX) program.
The 30 players selected for the comprehensive REX training program based on a standardized national curriculum include Taylor Blight, Ava Bourbonnais, Abby Elgert, Kelli Haffie, Anneke Odinga and Skylar Weinstein from the fourth-place Impact finishers at the Alberta Soccer Association championship last month at Strathcona Athletic Park. The Impact finished 1-2 at the six-team provincials while outscored 9-7.
The REX players participate in field training four days a week, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., plus weight training twice a week for one hour per day.
Atom football
The three St. Albert Minor Football Association atom teams won their respective games Sunday at Foote Field.
In division I, Darius Crandall of the Jaguars racked up five touchdowns and seven tackles in the 42-14 decision against the Stony Plain Blue Bombers.
Quarterback Dylan Jost ran for one major and completed a TD pass to Crandell.
Carter Campbell rounded out the scoring.
Steel Doronski was a force at linebacker with two sacks and Carter Hiscock recorded several tackles.
In division II, the Buccaneers pulled off two defensive stands to keep the Edmonton Mustangs off the board until the very last play in the 14-7 victory.
A pair of linebackers, Jakob Dunlop and Lucas Massey, led the way defensively.
Quarterback Landon Morris called his number for a TD run and Kodyn Hansen also found the endzone as the Bucs improved to 2-0 in the season.
In division IV, running back Zac Garrity opened the scoring and the Vikings never looked back while adding additional TDs from quarterback Rayden Tutt, who scored twice on bootlegs, and slotback Jacob Fuchtmann with the final score in the 28-7 outcome against the Beaumont Bears.
George Reed had multiple sacks and Merrick Ouellette provided a critical stuff on a goal line stand.
U16 provincials
The St. Albert Impact finished the Alberta Soccer Association U16 Tier I female championship with two wins and two losses as bronze medallists in the four-team tournament.
In the bronze playoff, Makayla Mudryk, Oriah Martin-Coates, Julia Mcdougall and Raina Kickbush scored and Quinn Hebert posted the shutout in the 4-0 decision over Sherwood Park Phoenix at Strathcona Athletic Park.
The Impact also beat Phoenix 3-0 to kick-off provincials as Mcdougall tallied twice and Alyson Katerenchuk also scored.
Martin-Coates and Mcdougall found the back of the net in the 3-2 loss to Scottish and Julia Alfareta potted the one goal in the 3-1 setback to Victoria, the gold medallist.
