Slash road win
The third victory in a row for the first-place St. Albert Slash was recorded Sunday in Red Deer.Bronwyn Boucher, Jenna Goodwin and Dayle Ross (power play) scored and Kiah Vail had two helpers in the 3-1 decision against the hometown Chiefs in the Alberta Female Hockey League.
It was 3-0 Slash (10-1-1) when the Chiefs (5-7-1) capitalized with the man advantage in the last minute of the middle frame.
Shots were 24-15 for the Slash and Holly Borrett (6-0, 0.83 GAA) was in net.
The two-time defending Esso Cup midget AAA national champions skate Sunday against Calgary Fire (7-4-1) at 12:15 p.m. at Mark Messier Arena.
Raiders shut out
The St. Albert Nektar Data Systems Raiders failed to light the lamp against the north division leaders in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.Ross Hawryluk of the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers faced 32 shots in Sunday’s 3-0 win over the Raiders at Akinsdale Arena.
Evan Fradette and Andreai Proctor-Ramirez combined for 27 saves as the Raiders (6-6-2, 36 GF/43 GA) suffered their second shutout loss in five games.
Fradette (1-3-1, 2.75 GAA) allowed two goals 2:07 minutes apart with under five minutes left in the opening period while stopping 15 shots in the first period and Proctor-Ramirez (4-2-1, 2.81 GAA) was tested 13 times in the last two periods as the Rangers (10-4, 48 GF/34 GA) notched their third goal at 2:47 of the third.
The Raiders were coming off their second win in a row, 6-2 over the visiting KC Pats (4-9-1), as Kye Buchanan tallied twice and captain Erik Boers (power play), Tyson Greenway, Eric Perneel and Noah Kramps also scored.
Robert Kincaid and Perneel posted two assists apiece.
Kincaid and Perneel share the team lead in points with 12 and Perneel is the top goal scorer with eight.
Shots were 35-25 for the Raiders and Proctor-Ramirez was between the pipes.
The Raiders are 4-2-2 on home ice when they host the Lethbridge Hurricanes (11-2), the 2018 AMHL champions and Telus Cup national bronze medallists, at 8 p.m. Saturday and Calgary Northstars (8-5-1) at 1:15 p.m. Sunday.
The Raiders are 2-4-2 against south division teams.
Sharks stopped
The St. Albert Sharks are winless in three games when the midget elite team hosts the North Central Impact in the Alberta Female Hockey League.Saturday’s puck drop is 7:45 p.m. against the Leduc-based Impact (1-4-1) at Go Auto Arena.
The Sharks (4-4) are coming off losses of 3-1 to Calgary Fire White (7-0) and 3-0 to Grande Peace Storm (6-1-1) last weekend after falling 4-0 on the road to the Sherwood Park Fury (5-0-2) the previous weekend.
Both home games were decided in the third period. Calgary snapped a 1-1 tie with goals on the power play and even strength, and the Storm broke open a scoreless affair after 40 minutes.
Aidan Soltis opened the scoring against Calgary in the first and the top team in the south division tied it at one in the second.
Layla Hood faced 23 shots and the Sharks were credited with 27 shots.
Calgary is the defending provincial champion after beating the Sharks 2-0 in the 2018 final.
The Storm found the back of the net at 6:04, 10:48 and 15:10 of the third while out-shooting the Sharks 34-22 overall as Hood (3-3, 2.17 GAA) tended the twine.
