Skyhawks football, SAWSL playoffs, Sabres exhibitions and Slash update

Hawks football

Friday’s metro Edmonton league contest between the St. Albert High Skyhawks and Archbishop Jordan Scots kicks off at 5 p.m. at Larry Olexiuk Field.

The division two Miles conference teams opened the regular season last week with the Skyhawks beating the M.E. Lazerte Voyageurs 40-6 and the Scots stopped the Leduc Tigers 36-14.

In week two of the Football Alberta Tier III (450 to 749 students) rankings, the Skyhawks are pegged fifth as the only metro Edmonton team in the top 10.

Meanwhile, the rivalry game between the Skyhawks and Paul Kane Blues is Sept. 21 at 5 p.m. in St. Albert.

Previous results were victories by Paul Kane of 78-14 in 2013, 56-0 in 2014 and last year’s scores of 43-30 in league play and 16-3 in the semifinals.

Sabres games

The John Ferguson Memorial Tournament starts tonight for the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre.

Faceoff is 7 p.m. against the SSAC Southgate Lions.

The Sabres also skate 7:45 p.m. Friday against CAC Lehigh Cement, 2:15 p.m. Saturday against the Lloydminster Bobcats and 1:30 p.m. Sunday against the Sherwood Park Flyers.

The Sabres are 1-1 in the pre-season after Saturday’s 5-3 decision against the Flyers in St. Albert.

The Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League opener for the 2018 provincial finalists is Sept. 22 against SSAC at 12 noon at Akinsdale Arena.

SAWSL playoffs

Sunday’s semifinals in the St. Albert Women’s Soccer League kick off at 5 p.m. at Forest Park Field.

The pairings are Mavericks 09 (13-0-1) versus Mavericks 95 (2-13) and Titans (10-3-1) versus Kickers (9-5-1).

The opening playoff results were 1-0 for the Kickers against Gini’s (1-13) and 6-3 for Mavericks 95 against the Devils (7-8-1).

The SAWSL final is Sept. 23 at 5 p.m. at Forest Park Field.

Slash marks

The first tournament of the season for the St. Albert Ron Hodgson Slash is the Calgary Firestarter this weekend at Great Plains Arena.

The pool D opponents for the Slash are Red Deer Chiefs, Prince Albert Northern Bears and Thompson Okanagan Lakers.

The 16-team competition ends with Sunday’s final at 5:20 p.m.

The Slash are coming off Sunday’s 3-1 Alberta Female Hockey League exhibition win in Red Deer as Madison Willan scored once and assisted on goals by Taylor Anker and Natalie Kieser.

Shots were 36-22 for the two-time defending Esso Cup midget AAA national champions.
