Slash victory

A depleted lineup didn’t stop the 2017 Esso Cup national champions from winning the season opener in the Alberta Female Hockey League. Jaden Bogden and Libby Langenhahn scored in the shootout as the midget AAA St. Albert Slash prevailed 2-1 over the Calgary Fire at Go Auto Arena. Brianna Sank gave up one goal while stopping 30 shots in regulation time and the five-minute extra period and was beaten once in the shootout. Calgary opened the scoring with a shorthanded effort in the first period and Makenna Schuttler knotted the count 42 seconds into the second with Bogden assisting on the play. The Slash were credited with 24 shots on net. The defending AFHL and Pacific Region champions dressed 13 players and one affiliate because of player commitments with the U18 Team Alberta selection camp. Tuesday’s score against the visiting Edmonton Pandas was unavailable at press time. The teams play again Saturday at 7:45 p.m. at Clare Drake Arena.

Crusaders on top

The St. Albert Source for Sports Crusaders tallied twice on 52 shots and Shane Zilka posted the shutout in Friday’s season lid-lifter against the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers. Logan McKinley struck shorthanded in the second period and Dawson Laycock notched the insurance marker on the power play with 11:54 remaining in the Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League contest at Go Auto Arena. Rhys Mazur assisted on both goals and Shane Zilka stopped 15 shots in the 2-0 decision. Monday’s score against the Leduc Roughnecks in St. Albert was unavailable at press time.
