The St. Albert Slash are a perfect 3-0 as the defending Alberta Female Hockey League champions.
Madison Willan, Shyla Kirwer, Alexis Butz and Mackenzie Butz found the back of the net on 34 shots and Brianna Sank (2-0, 0.96 GAA) recorded 20 saves in Saturday’s 4-1 victory of the Edmonton Pandas at Clare Drake Arena.
The 2017 Esso Cup midget AAA national gold medallists also beat the Pandas 5-1 earlier in the week in St. Albert.
The Slash host the Red Deer Chiefs (0-0-1) Saturday at 7:45 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
Jets power up
The Morinville Jets pumped in two unanswered goals in the third period on 20 shots in Sunday’s win in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.
Brett Kampjes at 4:12 and Brett Dubuc’s shorthanded effort at 11:32 turned a 3-3 stalemate into a 5-3 result against the Leduc Riggers (1-6) at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.
Dubuc’s first goal of the game made it 3-2 Jets midway through the second.
Jaron Coles and Lee Gadoury also scored against a depleted Leduc lineup.
Jason Morgan chipped in with three assists and Joshua Perrott had a pair of helpers.
Shots overall were 53-26 for the Jets in support of Jaeden McConnell (2-1, 4.21 GAA).
Gadoury leads the Jets in scoring with nine goals and 13 points. Perrott’s nine points include eight assists and Dubuc, a CJHL second-team all-star last season, has sniped six goals.
Friday the Jets (3-1-1) visit the Fort Saskatchewan Hawks (3-1-1) at 8 p.m. at JRC Arena and Sunday’s home game against the Sherwood Park Knights (2-3-1) starts at 7:15 p.m.
Raiders stymied
The St. Albert Tire Warehouse Raiders are back to square one with a .500 record after losing twice in Calgary last weekend.
The Raiders (2-2) suffered setbacks of 4-3 to the Northstars and 5-0 to the Buffaloes in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.
Aidan West’s first goal in his 33rd game as a Raider, power-play markers by Austin Spiridakis and Mason Rezewski and Jacob Charko’s two assists provided the offence against the Northstars (3-0-1).
Rezewski, a defenceman, added one assist and with 8:14 left in the contest, was assessed a checking from behind minor and game misconduct. The second-year Raider was also suspended for the next game against the Buffaloes.
Evan Fradette was in net as the Raiders were out-shot 32-22.
Period scores were 2-1 and 3-1 for the Northstars and their last two goals were power-play tallies.
Mitch Reidy (2-1, 3.16 GAA) was peppered with 45 shots by the Buffaloes (4-0) and was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct 10-minute infraction halfway through the third.
Fradette (0-1, 3.48 GAA) closed out the loss with three saves in nine minutes of relief.
West, a defenceman, was also tagged with a checking from behind minor and game misconduct with 13 minutes gone in the game.
The Buffalos struck three times in the first while capitalizing once with the man advantage and in the third potted two at even strength.
Saturday the Raiders and KC Pats (2-2) face-off at 1:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The Raiders also host the Lethbridge Hurricanes (3-1) at 1:15 p.m. Sunday.
Sabres scoring
Five goals in the third period turned a close game into a convincing victory for the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres.
Chase Visser (shorthanded at 6:47), Evan Arnold, the second of the night by David Saunders and a pair in the last minute by Tyson Greenway, including an empty-netter, pushed the Sabres past CAC Lehigh Cement 7-3 Friday at Callingwood Recreation Centre.
The Sabres led 2-1 after 40 minutes.
Palmer Strang also registered one goal and two assists.
The shot count was 34-24 for the Sabres and Matt Tebbutt (3-0, 2.55 GAA) was in net.
The Sabres (4-0-1) and CAC (3-2) are ranked first and second in the nitro north standings in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.
This weekend the Sabres are in Calgary to play the Bisons (4-0-2) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Cardel Rec South and the Flames (3-3) at 12:15 p.m. Sunday at Max Bell Centre.
Midget 15 Flyers
Luke Cust’s power-play marker in the third period was the game winner Sunday for the St. Albert Flyers in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.
The 3-2 decision against the PAC Saints at Grant Fuhr Arena was the first victory of the season for the midget 15 Flyers (1-1-1).
Matt Reidy and Dylan McFatridge also scored against the Saints (2-1-1)
Shots were 33-25 for the Flyers and Ethan Barwick was between the pipes.
Carter Albrecht of the Saints tied at two in the middle frame.
Albrecht and Kyle Nelson, the Saints’ netminder against the Flyers, played in the St. Albert Raiders Hockey Club bantam rep system last season.
The home opener for the Flyers is Sunday against the Rockyview Raiders (3-0), a south division team based in Chestermere. Faceoff is 10:45 a.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
Blues post win
Kiegen Miller tallied twice as the St. Albert Blues doubled Sherwood Park Oilers in the Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League.
Brett Miller and Josh Klassen also scored in Sunday’s 4-2 win in Sherwood Park.
Miller’s second goal was an empty netter while killing a penalty.
Ryley Osland faced 31 shots by the Oilers (1-2).
The Blues (1-0-1) skate Friday against the Whitecourt Wolverines (0-2) at 8:15 p.m. at Troy Murray Arena and Sunday’s game time is 12:30 p.m. against the host Beaumont Braves (2-0-1).
Crusaders rolling
The St. Albert Source for Sports Crusaders remain undefeated in the Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League after sweeping last weekend’s road trip.
Scores were 7-0 against the Grande Peace Storm (0-2) in Clairmont and 4-2 against the Whitecourt Wolverines (0-2).
Shane Zilka was tested 18 times by the Storm while posting his second shutout in as many starts.
The Crusaders (4-0) were credited with 42 shots and three of the goals were scored on the power play.
Matt Offenberger with a pair, singles by Ryan Deets, Christian Conlon, Cole Ridd, Adam Jereniuk and Hayden Laporte and two assists by Logan McKinley paced the offence.
McKinley, Caleb Caines, Deets on the power play and Jacob Pasalic lit the lamp against the Wolverines. McKinley also had two helpers.
The shot count was 26-19 for the Crusaders and the netminder was Spencer Hutson.
