Wednesday the Merchants dropped a 5-1 decision to the North Edmonton Red Wings at Londonderry Arena. Friday the Merchants (6-4) hosted the Fort Saskatchewan Hawks but the score was unavailable at press time.

Merchants lose

The third loss in a row and the fourth in five games for the St. Albert Merchants was Wednesday’s 5-1 result against the North Edmonton Red Wings. The Red Wings led by five when Cam Mazur sniped his team-leading seventh goal of the season and second on the power play with 6:17 to play at Londonderry Arena. Shots were 46-32 for the Red Wings and Brendan Boughen (2-1, 2.67 GAA) of the Merchants was in net. The Red Wings (6-3) tallied once in the first period and the fourth goal was a shorthanded effort with 3:07 left in the second. The fifth goal was scored on the power play in the third. Friday the Merchants (6-4) hosted the Fort Saskatchewan Hawks (3-2-2) but the score was unavailable at pres time. The Blue Guys are back on the ice next week against the Riggers (2-7) Friday in Leduc and the Spruce Grove Regals (1-6-1) Sunday at Akinsdale Area. Faceoff times are 8 p.m.

Raiders update

The St. Albert Tire Warehouse Raiders have assigned letters to four returning players on the midget AAA hockey team. Defenceman Mason Rezewski was named the captain and the assistants are forwards’ Xavier Halterman, Eddie Gallagher and Brady Nicholas. The Raiders are 2-4 after losing four in a row and have yet to play a game with a full lineup due in large part to injuries. Meanwhile, defenceman Ethan Green has joined the Raiders after nine games with the Spruce Grove Saints in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Aidan West and Ryan Harker, a pair of defencemen, also made their AJHL debuts this week as call-ups. West played Sunday for the Canmore Eagles against the Lloydminster Bobcats and Harker saw action Wednesday with the Saints against the Whitecourt Wolverines. The Raiders continue to be very active in the community and the latest project was dropping by random houses to rake leaves and assist with yard maintenance this week.

Sabres result

The St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres and Leduc Oil Kings settled for a 2-2 draw Wednesday in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League. Zachry Desranleau scored in the first period and Graeme Hampton pulled the Sabres even at two in the middle frame at Akinsdale Arena. According to scoresheet on the AMBHL website, the Sabres outshot Leduc 29-1 in the third and 51-8 overall. The Sabres (5-1-2) are first in the nitro north division and Leduc (3-2-2) is second in the charger north standings. Tonight the Sabres face-off against the PAC Saints (3-3) at 6:15 p.m. at Grant Fuhr Arena and Monday’s game against CAC Lehigh Cement (4-3) is 6:45 p.m. at the Akinsdale rink.

Midget 15 Flyers

The St. Albert Flyers posted two wins in three nights this week in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League. Scores were 4-1 against the Maple Leafs (2-2-1) Tuesday at Akinsdale Arena and 8-4 against the KC Centennials (0-5) Thursday at Callingwood Recreation Centre. The midget 15 Flyers (3-1-2) were led by Taige Harding’s one goal and two assists against the Leafs. Luke Cust, Ryley Morgan (power play) and Maddux Nollski (empty net) also scored. The Flyers outshot the Leafs 43-26 and Ethan Barwick (2-1, 2.35 GAA) backstopped the team to victory. Eight players lit the lamp against KC and they were Ethan Pool, Cust (shorthanded), Morgan, Ethan McKinley and Matt Reidy in the second period and Dylan McFatridge, Ronin Pusch (power play) and Nollski (power play) in the third. Harding also collected three assists. Nollski leads the Flyers in goals with five and is the co-leader in points with McFatridge at eight apiece. The shot count was 57-23 for the Flyers and Matt Clement (1-0-2, 4.00 GAA) was in net. The Flyers skate at the Akinsdale rink this weekend against the Sherwood Park Squires (4-1) today at 4:15 p.m. and Grande Peace Storm (0-5-1) Sunday at 10:45 a.m.

Midget AA score

The St. Albert Source for Sports Crusaders were winners of four in a row before Sunday’s 2-2 tie with the KC Colts in the Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League. Logan McKinley struck in the first period and Matt Kachmar tied it with 3:12 to play at Mark Messier Arena. The Crusaders outshot KC 46-21 as Shane Zilka and Spencer Hutson split time between the pipes for the home team. KC (0-3-1) is last in the Anderson division and the Crusaders (4-0-1) were first in the Besa division before hosting the NEBC Yukon Traders (2-0) Friday. The score was unavailable at press time. Going into the game, McKinley was the team’s top scorer with nine points and was tied with Ryan Deets in goals with four apiece.
