SAPEC volleyball
The annual St. Albert Physical Education Council junior high volleyball tournament, sponsored by Active Physio Works, swings into action Friday for 16 boys’ and 16 girls’ teams.The first of 102 matches is at 2 p.m. in pool play at Lorne Akins, Richard S. Fowler, Elmer S. Gish and William D. Cuts for the boys, and the SkyDome and Vincent J. Maloney for the girls.
The round of 16 playoffs starts at 9 a.m., and finals are at 3:15 p.m. at Lorne Akins for the boys and the SkyDome for the girls.
SAPEC and area teams in the tournament include Alexandre-Tache, Camilla Thunderbirds, William D. Cuts Crusaders, Elmer S. Gish Warriors, ESSMY Leopards, Lillian Schick Knights, Lorne Akins Gators, Morinville Wolves, Richard S. Fowler Falcons, Sir George Simpson Voyageurs, Sturgeon Heights Eagles and Vincent J. Maloney Marauders.
Last year’s winners were Lorne Akins for the boys and Morinville for the girls.
Meanwhile, the SAPEC regular season starts Thursday. The defending Tier I city champions are Cuts for the boys and Simpson for the girls.
Bellerose football
The Bellerose Bulldogs host the Spruce Grove Panthers in the metro Edmonton high school football Friday.The division one Carr conference match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Larry Olexiuk Field.
Spruce Grove is 1-2 and Bellerose is 0-2.
Bellerose is coming off one of the worst losses in team history – 77-0 to the Harry Ainlay Titans (2-0) in St. Albert. Ainlay, last year’s Carr conference and Alberta Bowl champion, is the No. 1-ranked Tier I (1,250-plus students) team in the province.
Bellerose also lost the junior league season-opener to Ainlay 42-6 last week at Clarke Stadium.
On Tuesday the junior Bulldogs played the visiting Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds (1-0) but the score was unavailable at press time.
Slash pre-season
The last pre-season tournament for the St. Albert Ron Hodgson Slash before the Alberta Female Hockey League regular season starts is the NAIT Blue Gold this weekend.Game times are 3:30 p.m. on Friday against the Edmonton Pandas, Saturday at 12 p.m. against the Melville Prairie Fire and 7 p.m. against the Vancouver Comets, and 1:30 p.m. Sunday against the Red Deer Chiefs at NAIT Arena.
The Slash, winners of back-to-back Esso Cup midget AAA national championships, start league play Oct. 6 against the Rocky Mountain Raiders at 11:45 a.m. and Calgary Fire at 8:30 p.m. at Clare Drake Arena.
