SAMSL all-stars
Weather permitting, Thursday’s friendly between the St. Albert Men’s Soccer League all-stars and St. Albert Impact division 2A men’s team kicks off at 7 p.m. at Riel Park.The match was originally scheduled for July 22 but was postponed because of excesses standing water on the first pitch at the St. Albert Soccer Association facility.
The SAMSL all-star lineup consists of 18 players from the first-place Impact Alumni (8-0-6), 2017 playoff cup champion Forest Park Rangers, DV Youngmen, Prestige Worldwide, Magnitude FC and LADS FC.
The Impact are 6-4-1 (28 GF/17 GA) in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.
Last year’s score was 6-2 for SAMSL.
Meanwhile, the SAMSL playoffs start Aug. 12 to determine the two-match aggregate finalists for the playoff cup and third-place trophy.
The Impact Alumni will also represent SAMSL at the Alberta Soccer Association Tier 3 provincials Aug. 31 to Sept. 3 at ESA Complex. There is also a possibility the Rangers will make a return trip to Tier 3 provincials after going 0-3 without a goal last year in Calgary.
SARFC match
The next Alberta premier women’s match at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club is Thursday against the Pirates.Kickoff is 7 p.m. between fifth-place SARFC (4-3, 292 PF/219 PA) and the eighth-place Pirates (2-4, 221 PF/169 PA).
The last match for SARFC was Saturday’s 72-10 collapse against the host Lep/Tigers (7-0, 408 PF/50 PA). Tries were 12-2 for the defending provincial champions.
SARFC is 2-1 against Edmonton Rugby Union teams and 2-2 against Calgary teams.
SVGCC event
The Sturgeon Valley Golf & Country Club hosts its annual men’s, ladies and senior ladies championship tournaments this weekend.Approximately 70 SVGCC members will compete in stroke play over two days for the ladies (36 holes) and three days for the men (54 holes).
On Saturday and Sunday, the morning crossovers are 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and Monday’s shotgun start for the men is 8 a.m.
The field is broken into flights for men and ladies with similar handicap range.
The lowest gross score winners for the men and ladies will have their names engraved on the SVGCC Legacy Wall.
The defending champions are Daniel Grant (men), Brooke Brezovski (ladies), Karen Morris (senior ladies) and Ellen Hodgins (super senior ladies).
The lowest nine men will also qualify for the 2019 inter-club team.
