Weekend games

League play continues this weekend for the St. Albert peewee and bantam teams in the Capital District Minor Football Association.

Today at Larry Olexiuk Field the peewee senior varsity Riders play the Edmonton Seahawks at 12 p.m. and the bantam senior varsity Palmer 49ers tackle the Stony Plain Bombers at 2:30 p.m.

Sunday the bantam junior varsity Fury lines up against the Edmonton Seahawks at 12 p.m. at Johnny Bright Park and the peewee junior varsity Colts visit the Bombers at 12:30 p.m. in Stony Plain.

The only undefeated St. Albert team in the CDMFA is the Riders, 5-0 in the Susan Morgan division after blanking the Sherwood Park Wolverines 56-0 last weekend in St. Albert.

Josh Ma opened the scoring with a 40-yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage.

The next TD was a 20-yard strike from quarterback James Hill to slotback Hayden LeBlanc in the corner of the end zone.

Hill added two majors on long runs, and running back Jamie Clark also crossed the goal line as the Riders led 36-0 at halftime.

Several players switched positions in the second half. Luke Bates led the offence at QB, while defensive end and backup running back Braxton Turner scored three times with power runs through the heart of the defence.

Alex Braden was also good on four of eight converts (worth two points in peewee).

Blues bounced

The second loss in a row for the Paul Kane Blues in the division two Miles conference was Thursday’s 42-27 result to the M.E. Lazerte Voyageurs at Clarke Stadium.

The Blues (2-2) trailed 21-14 at halftime and 28-27 with about two minutes to go but mental miscues on both sides of the ball proved costly against Lazerte (3-1).

Aiden Purden punched the ball in twice from the one for touchdowns, Ethan Wedman caught a six-yard pass and Jacob King scrambled 67 yards for the other majors.

The Blues were coming off a 29-0 loss to the St. Albert High Skyhawks (3-0) last week.

The metro Edmonton league season continues Friday for the Blues against the Leduc Tigers (1-2) at 7:30 p.m. at Emerald Hills.

Bulldogs football

The junior Bellerose Bulldogs are looking to make it two in row in Tuesday’s metro Edmonton home game.

Kickoff is at 6 p.m. against the O’Leary Spartans (0-2) at Larry Olexiuk Field.

The first win of the season for the Bulldogs (1-1) was 42-14 against the Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds (1-1) on Tuesday in St. Albert.

Meanwhile, the senior Bulldogs (0-2) played the Spruce Grove Panthers (1-2) in the division one Carr conference on Friday but the score was unavailable at press time.

Thursday the Bulldogs travel to Sherwood Park to tackle the Bev Facey Falcons (0-3) at 7:30 p.m. at Emerald Hills.

Atom roundup

Sunday’s results for the St. Albert atom teams in the Capital District Minor Football Association are as follows.

Division I: Tough sledding for the Jaguars in their first game of the second round of the atom schedule. After the re-tiering, the Jags were one of only four teams to remain at the Division I level, and the first game was a 21-7 loss to the Edmonton Mustangs.

William Imgrund-Peterson scored the only touchdown, while Fletcher Weirmeir and Jacob Bradley did their best to slow down the Mustangs.

The next game is 1 p.m. on Sunday against the Beaumont Bears at Foote Field.

Division II: The familiar passing combination of Zaeden Turner to Boston Linden was the only touchdown the Buccaneers could muster in a 21-7 loss to the Edmonton Chargers.

The score was knotted at seven when the bigger Chargers pulled away in the second half with two TDs.

Matt Loverock and Dillon White produced big plays on defence.

On tap for the Bucs are the Sherwood Park Rams at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at Foote Field.

Division III: John Clark was the top Viking of the day while dominating both sides of the ball in a 21-0 losing cause to the Edmonton Seahawks.

Julian Ammar and Gavin Frank also stood tall defensively.

Up next for the Vikings are the Spruce Grove Cougars at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Foote Field.

Division IV: The sister-kisser for the Avengers was the 7-7 draw against the tough Camrose Buffaloes.

Jesse Neale completed a touchdown pass to Milo Hartley and Mack Ives led the team in tackles.

The Avengers huddle up against the Edmonton Mustangs White at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday at Foote Field.

Meanwhile, the four atom teams will participate in the halftime show during today’s CFL game between the Edmonton Eskimos and Winnipeg Blue Bombers at 5 p.m. at Commonwealth Stadium.

Approximately 200 St. Albert Minor Football Association players and their families are attending the game and will be situated in Section A.

The St. Albert High Skyhawks, the third-ranked Tier III (450 to 749 students) team in the province, will also be in the fan tunnel at the beginning of the game.

The Skyhawks (3-0) hosted the McNally Tigers (0-3) Friday in the metro Edmonton league’s division two Miles conference but the score was unavailable at press time.
