Last year's male and female winners in the Active Physio Works five-kilometre race successfully defended their crowns Sunday at the Landrex St. Albert Road Race.
Luke Hanson and Abby Wilson of the Paul Kane Blues placed first and sixth, respectively, out of 49 finishers.
Hanson completed the race in 16 minutes and 19 seconds and Wilson's time was 19:37.
Both runners turned in faster performances than last year, when Hanson was clocked at 16:47 and Wilson went 19:42 for ninth overall.
Riley Stuermer of the St. Albert Skyhawks was the runner-up at 17:17, followed by Aidan Comeau of Edmonton in third place at 17:34 and Shae Kelly of Paul Kane was fourth at 18:50.
Wilson beat out Shannon Maisano, the 2012 St. Albert 10-mile female champion, Jasmine Feddema of Drayton Valley and Asia Kern of Stony Plain for the female title.
Maisano, a 30 to 39 division racer, placed ninth at 20:35, 10 seconds in front of Feddema in 10th place and 14 seconds ahead of Kern in 11th place.
The U19 division featured 15 males and 11 females, including the top seven race finishers.
Overall, 23 males and 26 females went the distance, compared to 29 males and 30 females in the inaugural 2015 five km, which replaced the six-km event. Two years ago, Hanson tied for first at 20:27 and Kelly was third out of 16 six-km finishers.

Jesse Bauer of Edmonton was the top finisher in the second annual Sturgeon Valley Athletic Club 10-km race Sunday.
The winning time for the 20 to 29 division racer was 34:34.
Robert Gustas of Edmonton was second at 35:15, Shawn Lywood of St. Albert placed third at 36:06 and in fourth spot was Thomas Brown of St. Albert at 36:41.
Angela Anderson, a 40 to 49 division racer from Edmonton, was the fastest female at 45:38 for sixth overall out of 44 runners.
Adeline Maunder of St. Albert ranked second among females at 47:57 for ninth place, Jessica Lacoursiere of Edmonton was third at 50:58 for 15th place and Sandra Paetsch of Edmonton placed fourth at 53:18 for 20th place.
There were 20 female and 24 male finishers.
The first annual 10 km last year consisted of 32 males and 21 females. Matt Setlack of Cold Lake was the winner at 32:37 and Jodi Nesbitt of Red Deer was the leading female at 39:33 for 10th place.
