Lorne Akins 7s
The 30th running of the Lorne Akins 7s, in various versions, is today’s showcase event at St. Albert Rugby Football Club.Eight female and five male junior high teams from St. Albert and Edmonton will play seven-a-side flag rugby starting at 9 a.m. and the tournament ends at 1 p.m. for the males and 2 p.m. for the females.
Matches are seven-minute halfs for the females and 10-minute halfs for the males.
Meanwhile, the Greater Edmonton junior high flag rugby league made its season debut Wednesday with seven-a-side male and female games at the Lorne Akins and William D. Cuts schools.
Last year Lorne Akins swept the Tier 1 male and female championships for the umpteenth time since 2012.
SARFC match
The St. Albert Rugby Football Club hosts the Nor’Westers today in the men’s second division.The season opener kicks off at 4 p.m.
The last SARFC second division team in the Edmonton Rugby Union finished 4-5-1 in 2014.
Rangers soccer
The St. Albert Rangers line up against Sherwood Park Karpaty in today’s division 1A men’s match in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.Kickoff is 2 p.m. at ESA Complex.
The season started Monday for the Rangers in the 2-1 decision against FC Fizi despite playing the entire match with 10 players, including a non goalkeeper in net.
NCABL baseball
The first home game of the season for the senior AA St. Albert Cardinals in the North Central Alberta Baseball League is Tuesday against the Sturgeon Paladins.First pitch is 7 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.
League play started Thursday in Bon Accord with the Cardinals beating the Paladins 17-2 in six innings due to darkness.
SAMSL kicks off
The St. Albert Men’s Soccer League kicks off the season fixtures Tuesday with all six teams in action.The doubleheader at Salisbury field starts at 6 p.m. between DV Youngmen and Prestige Worldwide, followed by the rematch of last year’s final between Forest Park Rangers and Impact Alumni at 7:45 p.m.
Magnitude FC and Lads FC also play at 6 p.m. at Eldorado field.
Teams not returning this year are Chester City and Misfits.
The Rangers are the defending champions after defeating the Impact in the two-game playoff cup aggregate. Scores were 2-1 Impact and 3-0 Rangers, the top team in the regular season at 12-1-1.
