The St. Albert women’s rugby division two squad only managed to score one try in a loss against the Druids.

On Wednesday night the SARFC squad lost to the Druids with a final score of 97-7.

Out of the gate the first place Druids dominated the game against the fifth place home team. By the first quarter the team was down 33-0 and by halftime the opposition had picked up a total of 64 unanswered points.

Coach Byron Elliott said that they were facing a very high level of competition from the Druids. He said that their execution of skill and identification of space made the team difficult to crack.

Many of the players that were playing on the Druid squad also play for their premier level team and have more experience than the home team. The St. Albert squad continued to fight for points until the end and made some big tackles before the final whistle.

“They were down on themselves but they kept going. It was led by a few players out there who were still going right to the end and still trying to make tackles,” Elliott said.

Elliott was also impressed with his squad’s unity while facing a tough loss.

“They lost together. They weren’t getting on each other. I like that because it means they are a united team,” Elliott said.

So far this season the second division squad has earned three wins and three loses. Wednesday’s game was their first blowout loss of the season. Elliott said that the team unity is what is contributing to their success.

“Their ball retention has been really good when they are playing similar calibre opposition and their ability to find space. There is talent out there,” Elliot said.

The women were coming off a blowout win against the Riggers on Saturday. The team dominated the game for a final score of 74-15 against the twelfth and last place Riggers.

The women’s next game is on Saturday July 22 against the Penguins/Reapers in Cold Lake.
