In league play the Blues defeated the Skyhawks 15-10.
The Blues and Skyhawks finished last in their respective pools but last week they posted convincing semifinal victories. The Blues blanked the winless Archbishop Jordan Scots 43-0 in St. Albert and the Skyhawks downed the Salisbury Sabres (2-1-1) 20-5 in Sherwood Park.
The last metro championship victory by the Blues was 2004 in premier. The Skyhawks are chasing their first playoff banner since winning premier in 2006.
Win or lose, the Skyhawks will scrum down against the Beaumont Bandits (3-1) Monday in the metro tier II (3A schools) final for a berth at provincials next weekend in Calgary. Game time is 4:45 p.m. in Sherwood Park.
The Bellerose Bulldogs lost only one game all year, but it was big.
In the metro Edmonton premier conference semifinals Monday the Bulldogs went down to defeat 24-19 against the St. Francis Xavier Rams (4-1) at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club.
The Rams moved the ball effectively with their big backs.
A lack of depth also caught up to the Bulldogs (4-1). With only 18 players dressed, they were missing two starters in the forwards and lost a starting back early in the second quarter.
Robert Blunden made four successful kicks from lengthy distances and converted Galen Pon’s try.
The Rams, last year’s premier champions, will tackle the Sturgeon Spirits (4-1) in tonight’s final at 6:30 p.m. at Ellerslie Rugby Park. Both teams automatically advance to the tier I (4A schools) provincials next weekend in Calgary. Last year Sturgeon finished seventh out of eight teams at provincials.
The last premier championship by Sturgeon was celebrated in 2009.
Sturgeon is coming off a 53-0 thumping of the Bev Facey Falcons (4-1) Monday in Sherwood Park.
Meanwhile, the lady Spirits (3-1) are gunning for their fifth premier title in six years today, when they battle the undefeated Falcons at 4:45 p.m. at Ellerslie. Both teams are also going to provincials. The Spirits won bronze last year.
The Edson Axmen chopped up St. Albert’s third division men’s team for seven tries in Saturday’s 43-22 win at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club.
Edson (2-0) opened the scoring in the second minute and never looked back.
At halftime it was 31-10.
Scoring for the thirds (1-2) was Braedon Platten in the 10th minute, Justin (Bomber) Armitt in the 25th and 55th minute and Ray MacIntyre in the 73rd minute. Platten converted the last try.
Armitt also spent time in the sin bin in the second half.
The next game for the thirds is Friday against the Norwesters (2-0) at 7 p.m. in St. Albert.
