The metro Edmonton high school women’s rugby finals kick off today for the Bellerose Bulldogs and Sturgeon Spirits at Ellerslie Rugby Park.

The Bulldogs battle the Beaumont Bandits at 4:45 p.m. for the city conference title. Both teams are 5-0 this season.

The only rugby championship for the lady Bulldogs in school history was two years ago when they won the city final.

At 5 p.m. the Spirits (4-0) and Bev Facey Falcons (4-1) scrum down for premier honours. In league play the Spirits beat Facey 41-5.

The Spirits are the three-time defending champions and winners of five of the last six premier crowns.

Win or lose, the Spirits will compete at the seventh annual Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association championships next weekend at Ellerslie. Last year the Spirits lost the Tier I (4A schools) gold-medal match 44-0 to the Raymond Comets after back-to-back bronze medal victories.

The Sturgeon Spirits are back on the pitch Monday after challenging the Beaumont Bandits for the metro Edmonton high school premier men’s rugby championship.

The Spirits play the Edmonton public league champion at 4:45 p.m. at Lynn Davies Rugby Park in the Edmonton zone Tier I (4A schools) provincial qualifier. The winner advances to provincials next weekend at Ellerslie Rugby Park.

Last year’s bronze medal by the Spirits was their highest finish at provincials after winning their second premier championship in three years.

Tuesday’s score between the Spirits (5-0) and Beaumont (4-0-1) in the premier final was unavailable at press time.

Beaumont will tackle the St. Albert Skyhawks or Archbishop Jordan Scots in Friday’s Tier II (3A schools) playoff. Kickoff is 4:45 p.m. at Ellerslie Rugby Park. The winner will line up against the Edmonton Christian Lions from the Edmonton public league for a provincial berth. Monday’s kick off is 4:45 p.m. at Lynn Davies.

The Skyhawks (5-0) and Scots (3-2) met Tuesday in the city conference final, but the score was unavailable at press time.

The Skyhawks defeated the Scots 24-0 in exhibition and 36-7 in the last game before the playoffs.

The first victory after three losses for St. Albert in women’s rugby was Saturday’s 45-7 decision against Lep/Tigers Green.

Speedy fullback Marcia Davis scored two tries five minutes apart in the opening 21 minutes at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club.

The halftime score was 33-0.

Six players combined for seven tries and captain Katie Davis kicked five conversions.

St. Albert kicked off the Edmonton Rugby Union spring league fixtures with losses of 48-3 to the Rockers, 70-5 to Strathcona Druids Red and 24-20 to Leduc Crude/West.

The spring league determines teams for the Alberta premier division and the ERU second division fixtures starting in July.

St. Albert’s next match is Saturday against the Clanswomen at 12:30 p.m. at Ellerslie Rugby Park.
