Gilmour selected

Kyle Gilmour of the St. Albert Rugby Football Club was selected to the Canada A lineup for the second annual Americas Pacific Challenge in Montevideo, Uruguay. The tournament is designed for players to gain international experience before the upcoming test match fixtures. Gilmour, 29, is one of two Albertans and one of five Calgary-based Prairie Wolf Pack players on the 28-man roster. Canada plays Argentina XV next Saturday, Tonga A on Oct. 11 and the USA Selects on Oct. 15. The high school rugby product of the St. Albert Skyhawks is a decorated forward – four caps in 7s and 15 caps in 15s for Canada – and was a flanker on the 2015 World Cup team. The Edmonton Rugby Union’s senior player of the year in 2009 and 2013, was also captain of the 2015 Canadian Rugby Championship tournament-winning Wolf Pack, and for Canada at the 2014 Americas Rugby Championship. Gilmour returned to the pitch this year with the SARFC premier team and Wolf Pack after recovering from injuries suffered at the 2016 Americas Rugby Championship.

Golf provincials

Connor Ackroyd of the Paul Kane Blues teed up a silver medal at the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association golf championships. The Sturgeon Valley Golf & Country Club member shot rounds of 72 and 75 for a two-day score of 147 at The Links at Spruce Grove and Stony Plain Golf Course this week. The winner was Ethan Choi of St. Michael's school in Pincher Creek at 139 (70-69). Last year at provincials, Ackroyd finished in a three-way tie for sixth at 153 (80-73)

Slowpitch Kings

The third time was the charm for the Watch and Jewelry Factory Diamond Kings in the St. Albert Men’s Slowpitch Association playoffs. The Diamond Kings (9-26) lost the last two championship series to the Strikers (13-17) after turning the tables in the deciding game in the best-of-three final by a score of 25-24. All three games were decided by one run. Brett Ferry made a clutch catch at the wall in the bottom of the fourth inning, followed by a tape-measure home run in the top of five. The infielders were also catching everything in sight and Alex Sutherland ended the suspense by snagging a fly ball for the last out in the bottom of the seventh. The Diamond Kings also defeated the Kamikazes (13-18) and Pound (13-17) in the playoffs to finish 6-2 in the post season. In the seven-team open A & B pool, three A teams had their own playoff series and the B teams compete for playoff honours.
