The last exhibition game for the St. Albert Merchants is 8 p.m. Sunday against the Sherwood Park Knights at Akinsdale Arena.
The Merchants are 2-0 in the preseason with wins of 8-5 against the Knights at Sherwood Park and 4-2 against the Edmonton Royals at Coronation Arena.
The Merchants begin their 34th season of junior B hockey in St. Albert on Friday against the rival Morinville Jets at 8 p.m. at the Akinsdale rink.
The home opener includes a tailgate party beginning at 6 p.m. in support of the Little Warriors and Be Brave Ranch Treatment Facility.
The Little Warriors is a national charitable organization committed to the awareness, prevention and treatment of child sexual abuse.
Original Joe’s community charity food truck will also offer tailgate partiers a choice of its ACE burger or Original Double Dog and two sides. The meals will be provided in exchange for donations towards the Little Warriors organization.
The Merchants will also present a $1,000 cheque to SAIF (Stop Abuse in Families Society) to assist with youth counselling.
The monies raised for SAIF were a portion of the proceeds from the highly successful second annual Merch Madness golf tournament in June at the Sturgeon Valley Golf & Country Club.
Midget Raiders
The St. Albert Tire Warehouse Raiders continue their preseason schedule this weekend with two home games.
The midget AAA team hosts the Grande Prairie Storm today at 2:15 p.m. at Go Auto Arena and the Canadian Athletic Club at 5 p.m. Sunday at Akinsdale Arena.
Thursday the Raiders beat the Southside Athletic Club 5-2 in St. Albert.
Austin Spiridakis, Brady Nicholas, Eddie Gallagher, Ryan Harker and Zachery Carlson scored.
Mitchell Reidy start in net and didn’t give up a goal in the first half of the game and Ryley Osland played the second half.
As of Thursday, the Raiders had three netminders, nine defencemen and 18 forwards in camp.
Players eligible to return but have made their Alberta Junior Hockey League teams include Maxwell Struss of the Calgary Canucks, Spencer Augot of the Whitecourt Wolverines, Brett Bamber of the Drayton Valley Thunder, Garrett Clegg of the Sherwood Park Crusaders and Martin Rudolf of the Spruce Grove Saints.
The last exhibition game is Wednesday versus the visiting Sherwood Park Kings at 7:45 p.m.
League play starts Sept. 30 against the Kings in Sherwood Park at 1 p.m. and the home opener is Oct. 1 against the Storm at 1:15 p.m.
Bantam Sabres
The St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres wrap up the preseason this weekend at the Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre.
Game times are 10:30 a.m. today against the Lloydminster Bobcats and 1:15 p.m. Sunday against the Sherwood Park Flyers.
The Sabres are 4-0 in the preseason after Thursday’s 5-0 shutout of the KC Squires.
The season opener in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League is next Saturday against the SSAC Southgate Lions at 1:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
Meanwhile, the 40th annual John Reid Memorial Tournament is Jan. 18 to 21 at Servus Credit Union Place.
Midget 15 Flyers
Monday the St. Albert Flyers skate against the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers in preseason action.
Faceoff is 6:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The Flyers also have exhibition games on tap at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre on Tuesday against the SAC Bulldogs at 8 p.m. and Thursday against Leduc Oil Kings at 6:15 p.m.
The Flyers make their season debut in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League on Oct 1 against the host Lloydminster Rage.
