Slash marks

The St. Albert Ron Hodgson Slash rebounded from the first loss of the season with the fifth victory in six games in the Alberta Female Hockey League.

The two-time defending Esso Cup midget AAA national champions beat the Lloydminster Steelers 4-1 Sunday in the Border City after losing Saturday’s home-opener 2-0 to the Steelers at Go Auto Arena.

The Steelers (2-3) slipped pucks past netminder Brianna Sank (2-1, 0.67 GAA) in the second period at even strength and on the power play at 9:11 of the third.

Bella McKee, the 2018 league MVP, faced 35 shots and Sank stopped 11 shots.

In the rematch, the Slash led 2-1 after the first and 4-1 entering the third.

Jenna Godwin, Mackenzie Kordic, Taylor Anker (power play) and Bronwyn Boucher scored, and Jaden Bogden added two assists.

Holly Borrett (3-0, 1.00 GAA) handled 18 shots and McKee posted 23 saves.

League play resumes next weekend for the Slash with two games on tap against the Rocky Mountain Raiders (0-5) in St. Albert.

Raiders results

The St. Albert Nektar Data Systems Raiders share first place in the north division of the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League after splitting two games last weekend.

Scores were 3-2 against the Sherwood Park Kings and the 4-1 loss to the KC Pats.

The Raiders and Fort Saskatchewan Rangers are both 4-2 and three teams are tied for third with 3-2-1 records.

This weekend the Raiders host a pair of south division teams: Red Deer Chiefs (5-1) at 8 p.m. Saturday and Okotok Oilers (4-1-1) at 1:15 p.m. Sunday.

Red Deer and the Lethbridge Hurricanes, the defending AMHL champions, are deadlocked in the south standings.

The Raiders are 2-2 away from Akinsdale Arena after Tyson Greenway (power play), Jaxon Dube and Cody Copes-Nielsen found the back of the net in Sherwood Park and Brad Adams potted the lone goal against the Pats at Bill Hunter Arena.

Andreai Proctor-Ramirez (3-1, 2.30 GAA) was tested 35 times by the Kings (0-5-1) before the former midget AAA Lloydminster Bobcat was assessed a five-minute slashing major and game misconduct with 63 seconds remaining. Ethan Barwick came off the bench to make two saves.

The Raiders registered 25 shots against the Kings and 36 against the Pats (3-3) as Barwick (1-1, 3.97 GAA) drew the start and faced 35 shots.

Flyers tripped up

The St. Albert Flyers recorded one point in two games last weekend in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

The first loss after three wins was Saturday’s 5-3 decision against the PAC Saints (4-0-1) at Glenn Hall Centennial Arena.

The teams combined for seven goals in the opening period and the first of two by David Saunders was on the power play.

Chase Visser also tallied and Ethan Sundar chipped in with two assists.

The shot count was 43-30 for the Flyers and Ethan Kadatz was in net.

Sundar’s second goal of the night and sixth of the season was the tying marker in Sunday’s 3-3 draw with the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers (1-3-1) at JRC Arena.

Sundar’s equalizer was scored with 14 seconds remaining after the Rangers snapped a 2-2 tie with 1:53 to play.

Dylan Leslie lit the lamp early in the contest and was credited with assists on Sundar’s third-period goals.

Carson Ironside was between the pipes as the Flyers outshot the Rangers 29-7 in the first and 59-27 overall.

Thursday the midget 15 Flyers (3-1-1) host the KC Centennials (0-4) at 7 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

Saturday’s road game against the south division Red Deer Chiefs (3-1-1) starts at 5 p.m.

Sabres rake Leafs

The first win of the season for the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres was Saturday’s 6-3 decision against the Maple Leafs in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.

The Sabres (1-3-1) outscored the Leafs (0-6) in the third period 4-1 and the last goal was an empty netter by Liam Cochrane after making it 5-3 on the power play with 6:12 remaining at Londonderry Arena.

Micheal Romeo also tallied twice while Aidan Taylor and Levi Fesyk notched singles.

Cochrane, Connor Dale and Carmelo Crandell added two assists apiece.

Shots were 39-24 for the Sabres in support of netminder Luke Roberts.

Tonight the Sabres host the Leduc Oil Kings (4-1) at 7:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

Friday the Sabres play the CAC (1-5-1) at 8:15 p.m. at Callingwood Arena.

Jets struggling

The Morinville Jets are off to a slow start in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.

The Jets fell to 1-5-1 after Sunday’s 4-2 loss to the Edmonton Royals (4-4) at Confederation Arena.

Lee Gadoury potted a shorthanded, unassisted marker in the first period and pulled the Jets to within one at 3-2 halfway through the third.

The Royals replied 57 seconds later on the power play.

The teams combined for 26 infractions for 104 penalty minutes.

Shots were 14-4 in the third and 36-20 overall for the Royals.

Colton Kucher (0-4, 3.75 GAA) of the Jets went the distance in net.

Friday the Jets visit the Leduc Riggers (3-4) at 8 p.m. and Sunday’s home game against the two-time defending CJHL champion Wetaskiwin Icemen (5-2) is 7:30 p.m. at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.
