Slash at home

Tonight’s home opener for the St. Albert Ron Hodgson Slash starts at 7:45 p.m. against the Lloydminster Steelers at Go Auto Arena.

The Slash (4-0) and Lloydminster (1-2) also face off Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Border City.

The third shutout victory in five days for the two-time defending Esso Cup midget AAA national champions was 6-0 against the Edmonton Pandas (1-3) Wednesday at Bill Hunter Arena.

Brianna Sank stopped 16 shots for her second shutout in as many starts.

Madison Willan tallied once and added three assists. The third-year Slash forward is the top Alberta Female Hockey League scorer with six goals and 13 points.

Jenna Goodwin’s two goals included a power-play marker to make it 5-0 in the third period.

Allison Reich, Jaden Bogden and Kamea Brezovski netted singles.

Bogden ranks second in the league scoring race with eight points.

Merchants game

The next home game for the St. Albert Merchants is Sunday in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.

Puck drop is 8 p.m. against the Stony Plain Flyers (4-2) at Akinsdale Arena.

The Merchants (3-4) are winless in two games after Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to the North Edmonton Red Wings (6-0) at Londonderry Arena.

Cole Gupta’s unassisted effort tied it at one in the first period and Peter Corrigan’s team-leading seventh goal, a shorthanded tally with 6:52 remaining in the second, evened the count at two.

The Red Wings notched the winner with 5:04 left in the period.

The Merchants outshot the Red Wings 12-8 in the third and 41-33 overall. In net was Colton Iwaschuk (2-1, 1.76 GAA).

Sabres rattled

The second 4-3 loss in a row for the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres against the KC Squires was Wednesday’s result In the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.

Micheal Romeo, Marko Stolic and Ashton Hutchinson scored for the Sabres at Akinsdale Arena.

Shots were 39-38 for the Squires and Teagan Kendrick of the Sabres tended the twine.

It was the first game for the Sabres (0-3-1) since losing by the same score to the Squires (5-1) Oct. 1 at Clareview Arena.

The Sabres are in action tonight against the Maple Leafs (0-5) at 7:30 p.m. at Londonderry Arena and the next home game is Oct. 17 versus the Leduc Oil Kings (3-1) at 7:45 p.m.
