Red Willow Badminton Club turns 30 on Sunday highlights On Tap

SIDELINED - Owen Herle of the St. Albert Fury is yanked out of bounds during action in the bantam Marv Mills division of the Capital District Minor Football Association. Sunday the junior varsity Fury (2-6) huddles up against the Sherwood Park Northstars (7-1) in the Tier IV final at 10 a.m. at Fuhr Sports Park in Spruce Grove. The Fury lost 64-0 to the Northstars in the last game before the playoffs. The Fury won last weekend's semifinal 22-17 against the Edmonton Seahawks (2-6).

Ladies bonspiel

The St. Albert Ladies Classic is underway with 20 rinks rocking the St. Albert Curling Club.

This year’s theme is Game of Stones.

The finals are 3 p.m. Sunday.

Last year’s bonspiel also consisted of 20 rinks and in the A final Lindsay Makichuk of Spruce Grove defeated Holly Jamieson 6-1 in seven ends.

Jamieson’s rink from the Jasper Place Curling Club went on to win the 2018 Canada Deaf Games for deaf and hard of hearing athletes for a berth at the 10th Winter Deaflympics in 2019.

The next major St. Albert curling event is the 3 Son’s Integra Tire Auto Centre men’s bonspiel Nov. 16 to 18 and the theme is Big Bucks.

Sabres games

The next home game for the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres is Sunday in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.

Faceoff is 10:45 a.m. against the GPAC Storm (1-9) at Akinsdale Arena.

Tuesday the Sabres (1-6-2) play the SSAC Southgate Lions (4-5-2) at 8 p.m. at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre.

Last weekend the Sabres lost 3-1 to the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers (7-2) at JRC Arena and tied the PAC Saints (1-7-1) 2-2 at Grant Fuhr Arena as Ryan Arnold notched the equalizer with six minutes remaining.

Connor Dale also scored as the Sabres outshot the Saints 50-31 in support of netminder Teagan Kendrick (0-4-2, 3.01 GAA).

The game against the Rangers was scoreless until the third period and Zakk Makeiff’s goal with 8:58 to go left the Sabres tailing by one. The Rangers closed out the scoring with an empty-netter.

Kendrick faced 45 shots while the Sabres were credited with 15.

Junior B action

Sunday the St. Albert Merchants host the Spruce Grove Regals in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.

Puck drop is 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena and the Merchants are 3-3 on home ice.

In the west division, the Merchants (4-8) ranked fifth and the Regals (1-11) were last in the seven-team standings.

The Merchants had lost four in a row and six of the last seven games before playing the Riggers (4-7-1) Friday in Leduc. The score was unavailable at press time.
