The St. Albert Rams are one step closer to playing in the midget A final after winning Wednesday’s playoff opener In the Greater Edmonton Lacrosse Council.Jackson Ganton and Mathieu Gautier produced five points apiece in the 11-6 result against the Sherwood Park Titans at Bill Hunter Arena.
Gautier’s hat-trick led all scorers as the Rams advanced into the A bracket of the four-team double-knockout playoff tournament.
The next game is Wednesday against the Parkland Posse at 7:30 p.m. at George Hughes Arena.
The Rams (12-4-1, 157 GF/100 GA) and Parkland (10-6-1, 145 GF/115 GA) finished league play as the top two teams and earlier in the month were ranked first and third, respectively, in the province.
Head-to head the Rams won three, lost two and tied one, which included a stretch of three games over nine days starting June 13 and the scores were 8-5 Rams, 9-8 Parkland and 7-7 draw.
The league final is July 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena and the second game, if needed, is July 11 at 9 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
The Rams posted period leads of 4-2 and 7-5 against the fourth-place Titans (4-11-3)
Ganton and Ronin Pusch tallied twice and singles were sniped by Cole Fournier, Noah Jala, Lugi Benincasa and Briley Maxwell.
The Rams were penalized for 27 minutes compared to seven minutes for the Titans.
Junior golfers
Low rounds produced top finishes for local golfers at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stop last weekend at the Derrick Golf & Country Club.Evan Matty, 15, of St. Albert was the juvenile male winner with rounds of 77 and 74 for a two-day total of 151.
Theo Leakos (78-86), Lucas Sadoway (87-86) and Kyle Racich (87-86) were among the juvenile finishers.
In the U15 female division, Bella Brezovski of St. Albert finished second by one stroke behind Kalee Soto of Edmonton.
Brezovski, 13, carded scores of 95, 87 (182), compared to 92, 89 for Seto, 12.
Connor Ackroyd, 18, of St. Albert was the junior male runner-up at 139 (72, 67).
The winner was Kaiden Nicholson, 17, of Edmonton at 139 (72, 67).
Brooke Brezovski, 14, of St. Albert placed fourth in the 15 to 18 female division at 173 (84, 89).
Jenna Bruggeman, 14, of Edmonton led the way at 153 (73, 80).
Regan Ackroyd, 15, was sixth at 199 (101, 98)
The bantam male division featured St. Albert golfers Ethan Wilson in sixth place at 158 (81, 77) and Kayden Jethon in 12th spot at 191 (101, 90).
Meanwhile, the Brezovski sisters were the only St. Albert competitors at the Canadian Junior Golf Association junior tournament at Boulder Creek Golf Course in Langdon two weekends ago and both finished second in their respective divisions.
Brooke fired a two-day total of 161 (82-79) in the U19 age group and in first place was MacKenzie Baustad of Calgary at 157 (77-80).
Bella’s score was 192 (94-98) in the U15 bantam age group and Georgia Barr of Calgary was the winner at 160 (82, 78).
Zone 5 soccer
Local soccer players selected to the Zone 5 (Black Gold/Yellowhead) teams at the Alberta Summer Games are also follows.Zone 5 females: Mckeely Gallagher, Ella Kyle and Carmya Mastrangelo of St. Albert and Keyanna Charpentier and Sierra Paskuski of Sturgeon County.
Zone 5 males: Dylan Marple, Nathan Morgan, Charlie Weichel and Kyle Wolf of St. Albert.

NCABL Cardinals
Scott Peterson delivered in the clutch for the senior AA St. Albert Cardinals in Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over the Stony Plain Mets in the North Central Alberta Baseball League.Peterson’s RBI single to left field with two out in the bottom of the seventh scored Nic Arlia from third base for the winning walk-off run at Legion Memorial Park.
Arlia also scored the team’s first run on Jake Enright’s sac fly.
Tanner McLean-Poll went the distance while striking out eight with no walks while giving up eight hits.
Friday the Cardinals played the Edmonton Blackhawks but the score was unavailable at press time.
The Cardinals (9-4), Mets (9-4-1) and Blackhawks (9-5-1) are chasing the first-place Sherwood Park Athletics (8-1) for the NCABL pennant.
The next home game is Tuesday versus the Sturgeon Paladins (0-12) at 7:15 p.m.
U15 male rugby
The St. Albert Rugby Football Club returns to the U15 final for the second year in a row after going undefeated in league play.SARFC scored 274 points and allowed 41 against in four matches.
The final is July 7 at Ellerslie Rugby Park.
Last year’s U15 team finished second in the playoffs with a roster of 24 players and this year’s team consists of 35 players.
The SARFC lineup includes Jacob King as a returning player to the U16 Edmonton Gold and he is joined by Chris Wilson, Andrew Gargan, Zac Brimmage, Rowan Moorehouse-Andrews, Josh Looker and the Raw twins, Marty and Jacob, on the elite squad.
U15 coaches Derrek Seelinger and Paul Looker are also coaching the Zone 5 (Black Gold/Yellowhead) rugby team at the Alberta Summer Games and 11 SARFC players will compete in the 7s tournament.
Combo camp
Only a few spots are available for the basketball segment of the ninth annual Hawks Combo Camp, Aug. 21 to 23 at the SkyDome.The camp assists males and females 12 to 15 years old prepare for basketball and volleyball school and club team tryouts under the direction of certified coaches and elite level local players.
Registration is full for volleyball.
Basketball goes from 12:45 to 3:45 p.m. all three days.
The registration fee for basketball is $110.
