Provincial playdowns for Impact women and men, U13 western baseball and junior B Merchants hockey

Division 1A Impact

The Tier 1 playdowns kick off tonight for the St. Albert Impact 4 (Murphy) division 1A women’s team.

The Impact (9-2-2, 56 GF/20 GA) plays division 1B Wind United (8-4-2, 28 GF/17 GA) at 6:30 p.m. at ESA Complex.

Both teams finished second in their respective Edmonton District Soccer Association divisions.

The winner lines up against division 1A FC Excelsior 1 (11-2-1, 41 GF/17 GA) or division 1B FC Excelsior 2 (12-1-1, 44 GF/8 GA) on Aug. 20 for the right to compete at the Alberta Soccer Association Tier 1 championship during the September long weekend in Calgary as the second EDSA team. Start time is 6:30 p.m. at ESA Complex.

Both FC Excelsior teams were tops in their divisions.

The Impact’s match against Wind United will also produce the opponent for St. Albert Impact 3 (Murphy) in Tuesday’s promotion playoff and the winner plays in the premier division in the 2019 outdoor season. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. at ESA Complex.

Impact 3 (4-12-2, 23 GF/59 GA) placed eighth in the 10-team premier table this season.

Division 2A Impact

The Tier 2 provincial playdowns start Thursday for the St. Albert Impact division 2A men’s team in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.

Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. against division 2B FC Waryaa at ESA Complex.

The Impact (8-4-2, 35 GF/20 GA) and FC Waryaa (9-2-2, 40 GF/14 GA) were the runners-up for the division pennants.

The winner plays division 2A Santos FC (9-4-1, 36 GF/22 GA) or division 2B Punjab United (10-2-2, 48 GF/23 GA), the top teams in their divisions, at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 20 at ESA Complex for a spot at Alberta Soccer Association Tier 2 championship during the September long weekend in Calgary.

U13 westerns

Thursday the St. Albert Cardinals play ball at the U13 westerns in Brandon.

The Baseball Alberta peewee AAA Tier I silver medallists swing for the fences against Regina (Sask. 1) at 2:30 p.m. and Friday’s games are 10:30 a.m. against North Winnipeg (Man. 2) and 4 p.m. against the Brandon hosts to wrap up the pool B draw of the eight-team tournament.

The playoffs start Saturday morning and Sunday’s medal finals are 9 a.m. for bronze and 12 noon for gold.

The Red Deer Braves are also competing at nationals.

At provincials in Spruce Grove, the Cardinals rallied in the bottom of the seventh to edge Red Deer 9-8 in the semifinals.

The final was 12-1 for the Parkland Twins against the Cardinals, 4-1 in the tournament after going 15-3 in the provincial round and 19-5 overall in the Baseball Alberta league.

Merchants tryouts

The St. Albert Merchants are accepting registrations for the junior B team’s conditioning camp and tryouts at Akinsdale Arena.

Exhibitions are scheduled for Sept 7 against the host Sherwood Park Knights at 8:15 p.m., Sept. 9 against the Edmonton Royals at 8 p.m. at Confederation Arena and Sept. 16 against the Knights at 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The Capital Junior B Hockey League lid-lifter is Sept. 21 against the visiting Beverly Warriors at 8 p.m.

The Merchants are coming off a 21-16-1 (150 GF/150 GA) regular season for fourth place in the west division and the team’s playoff record was 2-4 (19 GF/27 GA) as quarter-finalists.

The new head coach of the Merchants is Zach Rodda, an assistant coach for the Money Men for five seasons.
