Wrestling action
The Provincial Junior Olympics pound the mats today at St. Albert Catholic High School.The Alberta Amateur Wrestling Association championship meet starts at 9 a.m. for 138 junior high (2003-05) males and females, followed at 12 noon for the male and female tykes (primary 2012/13 and elementary 2010/11), novices (2008/09) and kids (2006/07).
Overall, five to six mats will be in use throughout the day for 338 total wrestlers.
Grapplers from the Lorne Akins, Richard S. Fowler and Vincent J. Maloney junior high schools and the Bertha Kennedy, Neil M. Ross and J.J. Nearing elementary schools will be competing.
Bellerose hoops
The Bellerose Bulldogs are double trouble as the host team in Monday’s metro Edmonton basketball doubleheader.Tipoff times are 5 p.m. against the M.E. Lazerte Voyageurs (3-4) in a rematch of 2017 division three senior women’s final and 6:30 p.m. against the last-place Paul Kane Blues (1-7) in the division two senior men’s league.
The Bulldogs are winners of the last two St. Albert showdowns against Paul Kane: 83-77 in division one in 2016 and 76-61 in division two last year at Bellerose.
The Bellerose men are 5-2 for third place in the division two standings.
The lady Bulldogs are 8-0 and last year’s record was 8-4 after losing the division three final 52-43 to the 7-5 Voyageurs.
The metro playoffs start Feb. 26.
REM 15 Royals
The St. Albert Royals close out the regular season in the Rural & Edmonton Midget 15AA Hockey League with two games in four days.The first-place Royals (18-6-1) play CAC Volvo (10-12-1) tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Callingwood Recreation Arena and Tuesday's start time against the PAC Saints (3-16-3) is 8:30 p.m. at Mark Messier Arena.
The Royals are two points ahead of the second-place Hockey Central Panthers (16-4-3) in the 10-team league and the Panthers have two games in hand.
The best-of-three quarter-finals start Feb. 21.
The Royals are coming off a 6-3 decision against the Strathcona Warriors (5-19-1) this week in Ardrossan.
Carter MacDonald posted two goals and two assists, Cameron McConnell potted a pair and Adam Olsen and Jaydon Ryan notched singles.
Cole Crozier (10-3-1, 2.32 GAA) stopped 30 of 33 shots while the Blues were credited with 61 shots, including 26 in the second period as the visitors scored twice to lead 4-1.
