The Paul Kane Blues and St. Albert Skyhawks are playing on the opposite sides of the draw after the opening day at the 4A provincial women’s basketball championship in Lethbridge.
In the round of 16 Thursday, the No. 9 Blues beat the No. 8 Bishop Carroll Cardinals of Calgary 79-49 and the No. 7 Skyhawks lost to 74-55 to the No. 10 Medicine Hat Kwahommies.
The results put the Blues into the quarter-finals against the No. 1 Jasper Place Rebels and the Skyhawks were slotted in the consolation round against the No. 15 Charles Spencer Mavericks of Grande Prairie. Friday’s scores were unavailable at press time.
The Blues, Skyhawks, Rebels and the No. 5 Strathcona Lords and No. 11 Spruce Grove Panthers are the Edmonton zone reps at provincials.
The Lords defeated No. 12 Foothills Composite of Okotoks 69-62 and the Panthers fell 67-59 to the No. 6 Raymond Comets on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the 3A provincial men’s championship started Thursday in Medicine Hat with the No. 8 Skyhawks losing 87-75 to the No. 9 W.R. Myers Rebels of Taber and the No. 12 Morinville Wolves squeaked past the No. 5 McCoy Colts of Medicine Hat 58-57.
Friday the Skyhawks played McCoy in the C pool and Morinville battled the No. 4 Brooks Buffalos in the quarter-finals but the scores were unavailable at press time.
The Skyhawks, a metro Edmonton division two team, are the Edmonton zone third seeds at provincials and Morinville is the North Central zone champion.
The 3Aand 4A provincial tournaments end today.
