Rugby semifinals
Today’s semifinals at St. Albert Rugby Football Club kick off at 2 p.m. for the division two women and 4 p.m. for the premier men.The SARFC women scrum down against the LA Crude and the premier men battle the Strathcona Druids.
The winner between SARFC (8-1, 437 PF/154 PA) and the Crude (6-3, 307 PF/175 PA) plays the Lep/Tigers (8-1, 445 PF/138 PA) or the Clan (7-2, 454 PF/114 PA) in the Edmonton Rugby Union final next Saturday at 12:45 p.m. at Ellerslie Rugby Park.
The Crude are the defending champions, and the last division two playoff cup for SARFC was 2014.
In league play, SARFC lost 35-31 to the Crude on June 27 in St. Albert.
The sixth victory in a row for SARFC was 45-29 against the host Lep/Tigers on Wednesday.
The premier men’s Ken Ann Cup north semifinal is a rematch of last year’s playoff, 23-15 Druids at SARFC.
The premier teams wrapped up the Alberta Cup fixtures last weekend with the Druids winning 35-32 on Cameron Hall’s penalty kick on the final play of the match in St. Albert.
The 5-5 records for both clubs include the 46-15 win for SARFC (297 PF/289 PA) against the Druids (268 PF/314 PA) June 23 in Sherwood Park.
The Ken Ann Cup final next Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Ellerslie will determine the ERU provincial qualifier against the Calgary Rugby Union rep Sept. 29 in Calgary.
The Nor’Westers, the defending champions, play the Lep/Tigers in Saturday’s north semifinals.
Midget 15 Flyers
The St. Albert Flyers skate into the pre-season Monday against the Sherwood Park Squires.Puck drop is 6:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The midget 15 Flyers also face off against the KC Centennials at 8 p.m. Wednesday and the Leduc Oil Kings at 8:15 p.m. Friday at Millwoods Arena.
The Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League regular season for the Flyers starts Sept. 29 in Grande Prairie against the Storm and the home-opener is Oct. 3 against CAC United Cycle at 7:45 p.m.
AFHL exhibitions
The bantam elite Raiders and midget elite Sharks face off against the Edmonton Pandas in exhibition action in the Alberta Female Hockey League.Game times at Callingwood Arena are 7:30 p.m. tonight for the Sharks and 6:30 p.m. Sunday for the Raiders.
Sundays’ AFHL exhibition between the Sharks and Fury in Sherwood Park starts at 7 p.m.
Next weekend the Sharks are in Calgary for the Firestarter tournament at Great Plains Arena.
