Today is the last day for the 12-team Paul Kane Invitational with seven games on tap at Paul Kane and three at the SkyDome, including the 12:30 p.m. consolation final. In the championship bracket, the semifinals are 10:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., the third-place game is 5:30 p.m. and the final is 7:30 p.m. at Paul Kane. Admission for adults is $6.

Day two of the Paul Kane Invitational starts 9 a.m. with seven games scheduled for Paul Kane and three at the SkyDome.

The 20-game high school women’s basketball tournament tipped off Friday morning to determine the championship and consolation brackets.

The consolation final is 12:30 p.m. at the SkyDome and at Paul Kane the semifinals are 10:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., the third-place game is 5:30 p.m. and the final is 7:30 p.m.

Admission for adults is $6.

The Paul Kane Blues, St. Albert Skyhawks, Bellerose Bulldogs, Bishop Carroll Cardinals of Calgary, Catholic Central Cougars of Lethbridge, Harry Ainlay Titans, La Crete Lancers, Medicine Hat Kwahommies, Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds, St. Mary’s Saints of Calgary, Strathcona Lords and Jasper Place Rebels are competing in the 12-team draw.

The last two tournaments consisted of eight teams and in the finals Jasper Place beat Paul Kane 59-52 last year and 64-41 in 2017.

In the metro Edmonton league, the division one reps are Paul Kane (4-1), Jasper Place (5-0), Strathcona (3-2), Harry Ainlay (1-4) and the defending champion Skyhawks (5-0), while Ross Sheppard (2-4) is a division two team and Bellerose (4-1) is the division three finalist the last two years.

At last year’s 4A provincials, Bishop Carroll lost the gold-medal game to the Centennial Coyotes of Calgary 67-60, the Skyhawks fell to Bishop Carroll in the semifinals 58-47 before defeating Jasper Place 58-56 for bronze and Paul Kane beat St. Mary’s 80-45 in the consolation final.

SAPEC hoops

The St. Albert Physical Education Council junior high basketball league tipped off its regular season this week with all nine schools competing.

The defending Tier I city champions are the Richard S. Fowler Falcons and the results in last year’s finals were 60-43 over the Vincent J. Maloney Marauders as the undefeated lady Falcons repeated and 67-58 for the boys against VJM.

Tuesday the Falcons visit the William D. Cuts Crusaders and VJM is in action Wednesday against the host Sir George Simpson Voyageurs.

Game times are 4 p.m. for the boys and 5:30 p.m. for the girls.

Meanwhile, SAPEC hosts its annual Boston Pizza Invitational starting 4 p.m. Thursday with 16 boys’ and 16 girls’ teams competing.

Last year’s tournament champions were the lady Falcons, 57-41 against VJM, and the St. Peter the Apostle Spartans of Spruce Grove with the 58-55 overtime decision against the Fowler boys.
