Sabres game

The last game before the Christmas break for the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres is Sunday at Jarome Iginla Arena.

Faceoff is 10:45 a.m. against the Calgary Royals (11-5-3).

The Sabres (17-4-1) skate into the weekend ranked first overall in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.

The Sabres were undefeated in 12 games at 11-0-1 before Sunday’s 3-2 loss to the host Sherwood Park Flyers (9-8-4) ended a seven-game winning streak.

Carmelo Crandell’s second goal of the night was scored on the power play to knot the count at two with 3:46 to play.

The Flyers potted the winner with 62 seconds remaining.

Shots were 29-26 for the Sabres and Luke Roberts (9-3, 2.72 GAA) was in net.

Crandell is third in AMBHL scoring with 38 points and second in goals with 24 in 22 games, including a league-high eight on the power play.

Royals play twice

The St. Albert Royals close out their December schedule with a pair of weekend home games in the Rural & Edmonton Midget 15AA Hockey League.

Start times are 5 p.m. today against the Red Deer Chiefs (13-4-3) at Kinex Arena and 12:15 p.m. Sunday against the Sylvan Lake-based Hockey Central Panthers (14-2-2) at Mark Messier Arena.

The Royals (8-7-4) are coming off wins of 7-0 against the PAC Saints (0-15-2) in St. Albert and 6-5 against the host Camrose Vikings (3-12-3) last weekend.

Lucas Cadger (5-4-1, 3.00 GAA) stopped 34 shots by the Saints for his league-leading third shutout.

Matthew Fischer’s second goal of the night in Camrose made it 6-3 with 9:36 remaining.

#Bearsfighthunger

The goal for the St. Albert Bears at the second annual #Bearsfighthunger game is to exceed last year’s total of 1,042 lbs. of food for the St. Albert Food Bank.

Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to Sunday’s fundraiser between the Bears and St. Albert Blues and game time is 8 p.m. at Mark Messier Arena.

Hunter, the Edmonton Oilers’ mascot, will be in attendance.

The Bears (6-10-2) and Blues (13-2-5) compete in the Edmonton & Rural Bantam AA Hockey League.

Tonight the Blues play the Wainwright Polar Kings (7-7-5) at 7:45 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
