SAPEC volleyball

Today’s playoffs in the St. Albert Physical Education Council junior high volleyball tournament start at 9 a.m.

The round of 16 results determine the championship and consolation brackets for the 16 boys’ and 16 girls' teams.

The playoff venues are Sir George Simpson, ESSMY and Alexandre-Tache for the boys, and Vincent J. Maloney and the SkyDome for the girls.

The championship finals are 3:15 p.m. at Alexandre-Tache for the boys and VJM for the girls.

The third-place matches and consolation finals are also at 3:15 p.m. for the boys at Simpson and the girls at the SkyDome.

The tournament draw of 102 best-of-three matches started Friday with pool play.

The SAPEC teams in the tournament are the Alexandre-Tache Scorpions, William D. Cuts Crusaders, Elmer S. Gish Warriors, ESSMY Leopards, Lorne Akins Gators, Morinville Wolves, Richard S. Fowler Falcons, Sir George Simpson Voyageurs and Vincent J. Maloney Marauders.

The defending champions are the R.F. Staples Thunderbirds of Westlock for the boys and Fowler for the girls.

The SAPEC tournament is sponsored by Active Physio Works.

Bantam AA games

The regular season is starting for three St. Albert teams in the Edmonton Rural Bantam AA Hockey League.

This weekend the Saints are in Fort McMurray for a pair of games with the Barons.

Sunday the Bears host PAC Green at 1:30 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.

Thursday the Blues and Saints faceoff at 7 p.m. at Jarome Iginla Arena.

The ERBHL consists of 30 teams and the Saints, Bears and Blues are slotted in the blue division of the metro conference.

Flyers play twice

The St. Albert Flyers skate into the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League regular season with two home games scheduled this weekend.

Tonight at 7:45 p.m. the midget 15 Flyers faceoff against Grande Peace Storm at Go Auto Arena and Sunday’s puck drop is 7:30 p.m. against the PAC Saints at Jarome Iginla Arena.

Sabres at home

The Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League regular season continues Sunday for the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres.

Game time is 5 p.m. against the PAC Saints (0-1) at Jarome Iginla Arena.

Last weekend the Sabres started league play with the 7-3 loss to the KC Squires (1-1) and 7-5 win against the SSAC Lions (1-1).

Carmelo Crandell led the Sabres in scoring with four goals and six points and Ashton Hutchinson added four assists for five points.
